Engage peers and the public sector: identify
opportunities to support a wider enabling environment through peer and public sector engagement
Beyond embedding socioeconomic considerations
in your internal climate transition plans, it may be advantageous to proactively engage actors in the wider economy. Through this, businesses can help shape the enabling environment needed to succeed against internal socioeconomic targets, and spur greater socioeconomic outcomes in the regions they operate in, further bolstering societal support and potentially widening customer bases through reputational gain. Aligning climate plans with long-term public socioeconomic goals may also help businesses benefit from spillovers and efficiency gains. Peer and public sector engagement is an area that businesses can engage in from the beginning of and throughout their climate and socioeconomic impact journey. Continual engagement and collaborative strengthening of the operating environment is foundational for driving positive outcomes, initially by enabling a thorough and comprehensive understanding of context, and later by ensuring mitigation strategies and other interventions are efficient, effective and additional. Questions to ask may include:How can engagement with public sector organizations help develop a supportive
enabling environment for an efficient transition with positive socioeconomic outcomes?
–Extending proactive engagement beyond affected stakeholders may be beneficial in creating an effective enabling environment for both corporate climate transitions and positive socioeconomic outcomes. This may include engaging with public sector bodies or peers to align on ambition, processes or standards for undergoing such transitions. This may also include building cross-sector partnerships (e.g. across academia, non-governmental organizations and industry bodies) to deliver stronger outcomes.
Are there opportunities to collaborate with peers to achieve better outcomes for all?
–Engaging with peers may be beneficial to your organization and to affected stakeholders if, for example, opportunities exist to spur technological development, secure larger-scale access to goods, services and capacity, or reduce costs. Identifying such opportunities and proactively engaging peers is critical to maximizing such co-benefits.
Does your organization actively support and champion relevant proposals for
driving positive socioeconomic outcomes for your sector, for example, in relevant trade groups where you are a member?
Being responsive to input from industry associations
and trade groups can be important for positive external positioning, while also helping to drive positive outcomes as part of a wider network of related organizations.
