Kiwanis club invites fifth-graders to write flag essay DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Nov. 22, 2014 @ 4:19 pm Posted Nov. 22, 2014 @ 4:19 pm » Social News The Ashland Kiwanis Club will expand on its program of placing U.S. flags in front of community businesses by asking area fifth-graders to participate in an essay contest about the flag. On national holidays, the Kiwanis club places flags in front of local businesses that sign up for the fundraiser. In the morning hours, they place approximately 300 flags on 11 holidays each year. Businesses subscribe to the program to support various Kiwanis projects throughout the year, most of which are aimed at youth programs.  To extend that appreciation of the flag, the Kiwanians are asking fifth-grade students in Ashland to salute the flag with an essay of 200 words or less that can be on topics from the history of the flag to what the flag means to the students and their families. The first-place winner at each elementary school will receive a $50 gift card to a book store, with the second-place winner receiving a $20 card.  Essays are to be turned in to the students'  home room teachers by Jan. 15, and the teachers will work with the Kiwanis club to select the first- and second-place finishers at each school. The essays selected as best at their schools will be read by the winning students at an assembly arranged by the school.  For more information, call Russ Chadick at 541-482-0431 or Ron Parker at 541-488-0532.
