This year, the Ashland Gallery Association's walking tour takes in 17 galleries, studios and art venues in downtown Ashland and the historic Railroad District along A Street. Hundreds of foodies and wine connoisseurs will sample food and drinks while viewing art from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 25-26. "This is a rare opportunity to sip wine from 17 of the regions' best wineries, taste food from 23 Ashland restaurants and experience artwork inside 17 wonderful galleries that represent hundreds of local, regional and international artists," says Jeffery Jones, event coordinator for A Taste of Ashland, in a press release. Tickets cost $50 for Saturday's events, $40 for Sunday or $60 for both days. Tickets and information are available at www.atasteofashland.com or by calling 541-488-0178. Tickets also can be purchased at Ashland Art Center, 357 E. Main St. Tickets and wine glasses can be picked up from noon to 2 p.m. at the downtown Ashland Plaza kiosk Friday and after 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. The ticket price includes a commemorative wine glass. New for 2015, Ashland Springs Hotel, 212 E. Main St., will showcase the work of 19 artists in a Pop-Up Art Show in its Crystal Ballroom. "The Crystal Ballroom is a beautiful space ... light-filled. It will show off the artwork really well," says Ashland Gallery Association Board of Directors member and artist Sarah F. Burns. "Ashland has seen some notable gallerists retire and close their Ashland art galleries recently, so it's quite welcome to have the opportunity to show off work and meet art lovers and prospective clients." The Pop-Up Art Show will include landscapes, floral watercolors, charcoal figure drawings, abstract geometric paintings, wearable fiber art, assemblage sculpture and more. Pop-up art shows have become increasingly popular across the nation, with artists setting up temporary exhibits and reaching new viewers in surprising locations such as boutiques, malls and office buildings. Jones says the 4 p.m. ending time for each day of A Taste of Ashland makes the event ideal for residents and tourists who want to take in other attractions. "A Taste of Ashland is the ultimate Ashland experience," he says. "Tasters stroll leisurely through the quaint town of Ashland all afternoon, experiencing the best of Ashland art, food and wine — then have time to relax and attend an Oregon Shakespeare Festival performance in the evening." For people who don't want to walk the whole distance, AllAboard Trolley will provide free shuttles between the venues. Jones says the galleries were carefully paired with restaurants and wineries. Some of the downtown groupings include Hanson Howard Gallery with Standing Stone Brewery & Restaurant and Simple Machine Wine; Art and Soul Gallery with Basque restaurant Eleven and RoxyAnn Winery; and the Ashland Art Center with Pasta Piatti, Sesame Asian Kitchen and winery Quady North. Railroad District pairings include Gallery Karon with the Callahan's Lodge restaurant and Cuckoo's Nest Cellars plus Gathering Glass Studio with Brothers' Restaurant, Home State BBQ and Atlas Cider — a Bend company that makes hard cider using Northwest-grown apples, cherries, apricots and blackberries. Participants will have the opportunity to vote by ballot for their favorite restaurant, winery and gallery for the Taster's Choice Award. By doing so, their name will be entered into a drawing for two weekend passes to A Taste of Ashland 2016. A Taste of Ashland is the Ashland Gallery Association's signature fundraising event and is sponsored by Southern Oregon Public Television, Jefferson Public Radio, the Ashland Chamber of Commerce, Southern Oregon Media Group, Ram Offset Lithographers, Mountain Meadows retirement community and Southern Oregon Magazine. The Ashland Gallery Association promotes Ashland as an art destination through professional and student exhibits, First Friday gallery walks and educational programs.
