LABOR Joe Hill 100 Roadshow comes to Phoenix Thursday Comment By Local report DailyTidings.com By Local report Posted Nov. 12, 2015 at 2:00 AM By Local report Posted Nov. 12, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Ashland-based Jobs Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice (SOJWJ) hosts the nationally-touring “Joe Hill 100 Roadshow” Thursday, Nov. 12, in Phoenix. The Roadshow features folk musicians George Mann, David Rovics, Mark Ross and southern Oregon's Patrick Dodd. Labor activist Joe Hill, a member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW, also known as the "Wobblies") was executed by firing squad in 1915 in Salt Lake City after a controversial trial and despite international appeals saying he was framed for the crimes because he was a foreigner and a well-known labor activist and asking that his life be spared. His life and death are familiar to many thanks to Joan Baez singing the folk song "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night" at Woodstock in 1969. The Wobblies have a strong local connection, as a freight train full of IWW workers on their way from Portland to Fresno to show solidarity with striking workers there were thrown out of the train's box cars in Ashland in 1911 in the middle of winter. Nearly a 100 Wobblies proceeded to walk over the Siskiyou Pass and continue on for 150 miles. SOJWJ is working on erecting a Wobbly Free Speech Memorial in the mountains along their historic route to commerorate the trek. On its website (www.sojwj.org), SOJWJ says it "brings together labor unions, religious congregations, student groups and community organizations to improve working peoples’ standard of living, job security and their right to organize." A buffet dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and the concert begin at 7 p.m. at the Grass Shack Hawaiian Cafe, 205 Fern Valley Road, Phoenix, in the the Shoppes at Exit 24. The price for the buffet is $13.95; the concert costs $10-20, on a sliding scale with no one turned away. RSVPs for the buffet are requested; call 541-622-9483 or email [email protected].
