Ashland has an opportunity to get that process right Sept. 10 when the city's Public Art Commission presents three proposed works it has selected as finalists for the Gateway Island Public Art Project. The Gateway Island is the triangular median between the Ashland Library and Fire Station No. 1. where East Main Street and Lithia Way join. The Public Art Commission, a group of appointed citizens, began the process of choosing a work of art for that space more than a year ago. Members reviewed more than 60 applications from artists for the $100,000 project. Yes, you read that right. Major public art pieces are not cheap, especially when they will be displayed outdoors in all weather. The money comes from the city's hotel-motel tax receipts, 3 percent of which are dedicated to public art. Art is a subjective endeavor. When an artist offers a work for sale, all he or she need do is find one individual who wants to own it. But public art is intended to appeal to an entire community. It is unavoidable that some residents will not like the piece that is chosen. But everyone has an opportunity to participate in the choosing.
