The official wasn't authorized to speak publicly and provided the name on condition of anonymity. Mercer killed nine people at Umpqua Community College before he died during an exchange of gunfire with officers Thursday. A neighbor of the man who went on a deadly shooting rampage at an Oregon college says he "seemed really unfriendly." Bronte Hart lived below Mercer in the community of Winchester. She says Mercer would "sit by himself in the dark in the balcony with this little light." Hart says a woman she believed to be Mercer's mother also lived upstairs and was "crying her eyes out" Thursday. 6:22 p.m. Officials at Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg, Oregon, say four people injured in a deadly mass shooting remain hospitalized there but are expected to survive. Dr. Jason Gray, chief medical officer, says three other patients were transferred to a hospital in Springfield. Gray says one of the four people still at Mercy Medical Center is in critical condition and the others are stable. He says some of the victims who were taken to the hospital suffered multiple gunshot wounds. One person died in the emergency room. Oregonlive.com reported that the gunman was among the 10 dead. Douglas County Sheriff's Office reported that a "mass-casualty event" such as this activates protocols for identifying victims and notifying families, so names won't be publicly released for 24 to 48 hours. 5:25 p.m. A sheriff says 10 people were killed in a shooting at an Oregon community college. Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin says 10 dead and another seven injured is the "best, most accurate information we have at this time." Earlier, Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum said 13 people were killed in the rampage at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg. It's unclear what led to the discrepancy. Hanlin has said the gunman died after a shootout with police. He didn't clarify whether the shooter was included in the 10 fatalities. Hanlin says three people who were critically injured in the shooting have been transferred to hospitals in the Eugene area. 4:45 p.m. The sheriff overseeing the investigation of an Oregon college shooting has been vocal in opposing state and federal gun-control legislation. Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin registered his opposition this year as state lawmakers considered requiring background checks on private, person-to-person gun sales. Hanlin told a legislative committee in March that a background-check mandate wouldn't prevent criminals from getting firearms. He said the state should combat gun violence by cracking down on convicted criminals found with guns, and by addressing people with unmanaged mental health issues. Hanlin also sent a letter to Vice President Joe Biden in 2013, after the shooting at a Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school. Hanlin said he and his deputies would refuse to enforce new gun-control restrictions "offending the constitutional rights of my citizens." 4:35 p.m. A student at an Oregon community college where a deadly mass shooting happened says she was in a writing class when her teacher got a call from security saying the school was on lockdown. Hannah Miles is a 19-year-old freshman at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg. She says she heard gunshots from a neighboring classroom Thursday, and her teacher and fellow students huddled together in their locked classroom. She says they heard footsteps outside, and a man's voice call out to them, "Come on out, come on out." They remained quiet and didn't open the door. Miles says police soon arrived. And after students were convinced they were indeed officers, they opened the door. Miles says seeing the officers was "like a huge burden had been lifted." 3:45 p.m. Hospitals are reporting they have received at least 13 patients from the shooting at Umpqua Community College in southwestern Oregon. Monique Danziger, a spokeswoman for Sacred Heart Medical Center in Springfield, Oregon, says three women, ages 18-34, were flown to the hospital from Roseburg. She says their conditions were not available. Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg has at least 10 patients. Their conditions were also not available. A spokeswoman at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland says they hadn't heard of any patients transported there, but said that could change. Asante Rogue Regional Medical and Providence Medford Medical Center officials said no patients had come to Medford hospitals. Authorities say 13 people were killed in Thursday's shooting. The 20-year-old gunman died during a shootout with police. 2 p.m. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown says the gunman in a deadly mass shooting at a community college was a 20-year-old man. Authorities say the man is dead after killing 13 people and injuring at least 20 others at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, about 180 miles south of Portland. Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin says authorities received calls from the college at about 10:30 a.m. reporting an active shooter in one of the classrooms. Officers responded and found the gunman on campus. Hanlin says they exchanged gunfire with the man, and he died in or near a classroom. Hanlin didn't say whether the gunman killed himself or was killed by police. 2 p.m. A student from Rogue River witnessed the shootings, the News Review reported. Kortney Moore, 18, from Rogue River, was in her Writing 115 class in Snyder Hall when one shot came through a window. She saw her teacher get shot in the head. The shooter was inside at that point, and he told people to get on the ground. The shooter was asking people to stand up and state their religion and then started firing away, Moore said. Moore was lying there with people who had been shot. A detective sergeant and two detectives from Medford police are going to Roseburg to assist at the scene in the follow up investigation, Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said. 1:50 p.m. At a press conference a Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin confirmed the gunman at Umpqua Community College is dead. Hanlin said the man exchanged gunfire with officers. Hanlin didn't say whether the shooter was killed by officers or took his own life. The Associated Press reports at least a dozen people were wounded in the shooting this morning. 1:30 p.m. Oregon attorney general says 13 dead in shooting at community college campus. 1:10 p.m. ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) — A gunman opened fire at an Oregon community college Thursday, killing at least seven people and wounding 20, authorities said. The shooting happened at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, about 180 miles south of Portland. The local fire district advised people via Twitter to stay away from the school. State police Lt. Bill Fugate told KATU-TV that seven to 10 people were dead and at least 20 others hurt. A photographer for the Roseburg News-Review newspaper said he saw people being loaded into multiple ambulances and taken to the local hospital. Andrea Zielinski, a spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, told The Associated Press: "There's no more threat." She would not say whether a suspect was apprehended or dead. The school has about 3,000 students. Its website was down Thursday, and a phone message left at the college was not immediately returned. Neither state police nor the sheriff's office immediately returned calls from The Associated Press seeking details. The sheriff's office reported on Twitter that it received a call about the shooting at 10:38 a.m. Students and faculty members were being bused to the county fairgrounds, the sheriff's office said. "We locked our door, and I went out to lock up the restrooms and could hear four shots from the front of campus," UCC Foundation Executive Director Dennis O'Neill told the News-Review. Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg reported that it had received nine patients from the shooting, with more on the way. The White House said President Barack Obama was briefed on the situation by his Homeland Security Adviser Lisa Monaco. He was to continue receiving updates throughout the day. A spokeswoman for the Oregon department that oversees community colleges in the state said she had not received any detailed information about the shooting. "It's extremely concerning and sad," said Endi Hartigan, spokeswoman for the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission. The rural town of Roseburg lies west of the Cascade Mountains in an area where the timber industry has struggled. In recent years, officials have tried to promote the region as a tourist destination for vineyards and outdoor activities. — Jeff Barnard, AP 12:50 p.m. FBI agents from Medford are headed to Roseburg following the Umpqua Community College shooting in Roseburg. The agency's Portland division reported agents form Portland, Eugene and Salem are also inbound. On the ATF's official Twitter account, the agency also reported they are sending additional units, along with a K9 team. 12:35 p.m. Medford hospitals reported that they were prepared to treat patients from the Roseburg shooting, but didn't yet know if any of the injured people would be coming here. Providence Medford Medical Center is on standby as the region's trauma center today. The Oregon State Police and Douglas County Sheriff's Office also didn't immediately returned calls from The Associated Press seeking additional details. ___ 12:10 p.m. Courtney Case had been parking for class at Umpqua Community College when her volleyball teammate phoned her and told her to turn right around. There had been a shooting. She should leave immediately. Case, a 19-year-old sophomore at UCC, and a graduate of Cascade Christian High School in Medford, said she did. "I was just about to find a parking spot," Case said during a telephone interview with the Mail Tribune. "She sounded pretty serious." Now she's waiting to hear more information about what happened following the shooting. She and most of her teammates have gathered at a captain's house, waiting for the remaining four to arrive. They remain on campus because of the lockdown, Case said, but all are reportedly safe. "We have finally heard back from everybody. So that gave us a big relief," Case said. The Associated Press is reporting "multiple" casualties and many injured, though an exact number has not yet been confirmed by law enforcement or emergency responders. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said the shooting was first reported to 911 at 10:38 a.m. on its Facebook page. Case said the news came out of nowhere. The fire district later reported there were multiple casualties but released no further details. Umpqua Community College has about 3,000 students. Its website was down Thursday, and a phone message left at the school wasn't immediately returned. Sgt. Dwes Hutson, a Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokesman, says officers responded around 10:40 a.m. to reports of a shooting at the college.
