Ashland Ski Area has delayed opening until noon today because of fierce winds slamming the hillsides. The ski area reported that its typical 7 a.m. opening will be delayed by five hours, with wind speeds climbing high into the double digits and gusts of up to 70 mph at the lodge. National Weather Service officials have called for winds to start decreasing later in the day. “We are very upset over the need to delay our opening, but guest safety is our number one priority," Mt. Ashland General Manager Hiram Towle said in a news release. "There is a lot of fresh snow out there and more coming. We are committed to getting our skiers and riders out on that powder as soon as it is safe to run the lifts." Half-day tickets will be offered for noon to 4 p.m., along with tickets for twilight skiing from 3 to 9 p.m. Weather Service officials said in a winter weather advisory issued this morning that up to a foot of new snow could fall by day's end at Mt. Ashland. Up to 14 inches are expected at Crater Lake. Most other areas in the advisory, which includes the Cascades and Siskiyous, could see up to 10 inches. The advisory also covers Highway 138 near Diamond Lake and highways 62 and 230 near Crater Lake. "Moderate to heavy snow is expected late this morning into this afternoon, then decreasing through the evening," the advisory reads. Snowfall seems to even be reaching down as low as the Siskiyou Summit, according to Oregon Department of Transportation officials, though it's not accumulating on the actual roadway yet. "We have bare pavement, but it's snowing pretty good, and snow is building up on the shoulders," said ODOT spokesman Gary Leaming. Plows are currently grooming snow on shoulders along and near the summit, he added. "Even though it looks like we're heading into spring, you get up higher and winter's continuing on," Leaming said.
