Eric Guyer, 43, who has served as deputy director for transition services since 2005, replaces former Director Shane Hagey, who resigned in March after he was caught purchasing methamphetamine from a Medford police informant at a Purple Parrot in December 2015. Hagey pleaded guilty to a methamphetamine possession charge in May and was sentenced to 18 months of probation, 40 hours of community service and a $200 court fine. "We feel Eric has the ability to grow the community's confidence and successfully lead the department into the future," County Administrator Danny Jordan said in a media release. Guyer, whose official start date is Monday, Aug. 22, will have a starting salary of $106,454. He will report directly to Jordan, oversee more than 130 employees and be responsible for a budget of $16.8 million, according to the job description. "I'm excited and honored at the opportunity," Guyer said in a telephone interview. "The department has been my passion in life. I've built my career with this position in mind. I have such deep respect for the people I work with." In his new role, Guyer will oversee the department's adult probation and parole and juvenile probation divisions, along with the juvenile detention facility in Medford and transition center in Talent. On the adult side, Guyer said a key focus will be the transition process for people coming out of the prison system. On the juvenile end, he said he hopes to have enough resources and staff in place to keep youth offenders in local programs as opposed to having to send them out of the county. "We feel we’ll have better outcomes for our kids and families if we can do that," Guyer said. County officials said Guyer holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon and a master's in management from Southern Oregon University. He has coached basketball for St. Mary's School and has taught community corrections-related curriculum as an adjunct instructor at SOU.
