For the 2016 model year, the five-passenger mid-size sport utility (available in front- or all-wheel drive configurations) receives a number of enhancements. While there are a few styling changes, the big news is the new dash design, upgraded center console, the addition of an electronic parking brake and the new Mazda Connect infotainment system with larger seven-inch full color touchscreen display and new, 19-inch wheels. With a base price starting at $21,795, consumers have their choice of three available trim levels — Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. For the 2016 model year, the CX-5 powertrain lineup remains the same. Consumers have their choice of the 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G I-4 engine delivering 155 horsepower and 150 lbs.-ft. torque. Available with either six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission and requiring regular unleaded gasoline, it has an EPA fuel economy rating of 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway. CX-5 Touring and Grand Touring models are equipped with the 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-G I-4 engine delivering 184 horsepower and 185 lbs.-ft. torque. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, it has an EPA fuel economy rating of 26 mpg city, 33 mpg highway for front-wheel drive models (24 mpg, 30 mpg respectively for all-wheel drive models). Mazda engineers have done an outstanding job with the SKYACTIV engines, which deliver responsive, excellent performance on the road while achieving exceptional fuel economy for an SUV. Living up to Mazda’s “Zoom, Zoom” reputation, the CX-5 handing is much more like a sports sedan than an SUV. It’s also a lot of fun to drive. I really like the new dash design and the Mazda Connect infotainment system is easy to use, very intuitive and allows the driver to perform routine functions without having to take their eyes off the road — which achieves the company’s “heads up” design philosophy. This week I had the opportunity to evaluate the 2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring, which is the top of the line trim level. It was very nicely equipped. The only add-ons were a technology package (which included navigation) and the lane departure system. Standard safety features include dynamic stability, control, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, hill launch assist and traction control, to name but a few. One of the things I appreciated most when it comes to features and amenities is that Mazda has done a good job in ensuring the CX-5 provides a lot of value.
