Oregon Governor Condemns Trump Over SNAP Halt: ‘Focus on Feeding Families, Not Deploying Troops’ News By Lucille McNamara On Oct 21, 2025 Going hungry next month will be 757,000 Oregonians who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to bolster their low incomes, and Governor Tina Kotek is unhappy about the situation. The President Should Focus on Feeding Families and Stop Deploying Troops on Taxpayers’ Dime, Says Unhappy Governor Describing President Donald Trump’s decision not to negotiate a deal to reopen the government as ‘cruel and unacceptable,’ Kotek says the president should focus on feeding families and stop doing ‘things like deploying troops on taxpayers’ dime.’ The U.S. Department of Agriculture funds SNAP, but it is at a standstill because of the federal shutdown. However, the federal administration continues to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which, says Kotek, is ‘a clear message that the administration is prioritizing other matters ahead of putting food on tables’ in a press release. 210,000 Children and 130,000 Elderly Will Be Affected In Oregon, SNAP feeds one in six residents every month, of whom 210,000 are children, and 130,000 are senior citizens. The governor says any delay or reduction in food benefits during November ‘will cause unnecessary hardship and hunger during the month of Thanksgiving.’ She says the hardest hit will be rural communities, because of the large number of households in those areas that utilize SNAP. The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) yesterday began notifying the 757,000 Oregon SNAP recipients that they will not receive their monthly benefits in November. ODHS Acting Director Liesl Wendt confirmed that hundreds of thousands of children, older people, and hard-working families will be affected. “We are closely monitoring the situation in collaboration with the Governor’s Office.” She said SNAP beneficiaries will be kept informed of all the latest developments. Wendt’s advice is that in the meantime, recipients should take advantage of free food resources available in their communities.
