LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Jan. 16 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jan. 16, 2015 @ 12:01 am Posted Jan. 16, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News Other trails neglected The Forest Service appears to be giving the Ashland Watershed preferential treatment for trail maintenance funds in Southern Oregon. The affluent community of Ashland gets miles of new trail built, while the majority of Siskiyou Mountain trails are left unmaintained. The lion’s share of trail funds appears to be going to one trail system for one community. All across the region whole trail systems are disappearing from neglect. In the Siskiyou Mountains many trails, including connectors to the PCT, have been formally removed from the trail system. Whole wilderness areas, such as the Kalmiopsis, have been virtually abandoned since the Biscuit Fire and miles of trail have been lost. Another example — and there are many — is the Middle Fork Trail on the Applegate River. Designated as a National Recreation Trail, there is no longer a bridge across the river — it was taken out for supposed safety concerns three years ago — and the entire trail above the old bridge crossing is impassable because of downed logs and undergrowth. Why is it that National Recreation Trails get neglected in some areas of the Siskiyou Mountains Ranger District, while the Ashland Trail system is once again in the news with upgraded trail plans? I love this city of Ashland and do not want to take away its charm just because a variety of people and city officials seem to want to degrade what is loved by our citizens and visitors that love and support our beautiful city. If we do what is in the works by not adding back a few colorful bricks to the Plaza, eliminating the fountain in front of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Black Swan building and getting rid of the Iron Mike statue on the Plaza, what will be next? As a note, they already got rid of the Lincoln statue at the entrance to Lithia Park. I am sure the early builders of our great city are turning over in their graves. What's next? Do these same people want to degrade the graves of our city founders, so they do not need to tend to their gravesites in order to save money? From where I am sitting, I ask where are the voices of respect that were once heard for the people that created a city like no other? What is all this talk about "we do not want to spend the money to fix these things"? Has anyone from the city asked the citizens if they would be willing to help restore some of the past things in our city that helped give the look tourists and visitors like to see? Like most of us who came to live in Ashland for that special charm that was created in the past. It is just not right to say we do not need the charm, we do not want to spend the money or we want to put a concession vendor in place of the fountain in front of the Black Swan OSF building. Are the people in charge going to tell us next that we should get rid of the Historic Commission because they want to preserve the original nature of Ashland and make us change the fronts of the downtown charm of the buildings built in the 1800s and 1900s? Shame on you all. When I purchased buildings on the Plaza, I did what was necessary and worked with the Historic and Planning commissions to make sure we kept the original charm of the original buildings, and when I built new buildings like behind the Tree House book store, I spent the money required to design it with the help of those commissions to get a look that kept faith with what Ashland is, so 100 years from now Ashland will keep its charm, at least for the four Plaza building I've renovated.
