She was born December 11, 1919 in San Francisco, Calif. to Henry and Catharine West. Myra graduated with a BA (Economics) from UC Berkeley in 1941. She was married to her lifelong partner Alan Fering Erwin in 1939. They first met at Fullerton High School in Southern California and then met again at Berkeley. They had been married for 73 years when he passed away in 2013. Myra was a life-long environmentalist and contributed all her life to environmental causes such as the World Wildlife Fund, Nature Conservancy, the Sierra Club, and other organizations. She worked diligently to advocate for clean air, clean water, and clean soil for the American people. She worked to preserve wilderness and she campaigned for sensible planning laws that protected the environment while allowing for the development and expansion of cities and towns in California and Oregon. She loved the outdoors and wildlife and her favorite things to do were hiking and camping in the wilderness. She also loved her garden. The world is a more beautiful place for her efforts. Myra also was an active member of the Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Ashland for many years. Myra is survived by her daughter, Nancy Soares, and grandson, Nicholas Wantz. No funeral service is planned. Her ashes will be scattered in a private ceremony.
