With the addition of seven neighborhoods to its list of Firewise Communities, the city now boasts 19 — leading the state and the nation. That's a quick expansion from the beginning of the city's Fire Adapted Communities program in 2011. Ashland joined the Firewise program after the catastrophic Oak Knoll fire in 2010 that destroyed 11 homes. Oak Knoll was the first neighborhood to earn the Firewise designation.The work involves homeowners, community leaders, planners, developers and firefighters. Hazardous vegetation such as leland cypress and juniper is removed and homeowners complete personal property and landscaping improvements. The Firewise program was created by the National Fire Protection Association to help communities live with wildfire while protecting homes in the wildland/urban interface from destruction. Ashland is an ideal setting for the program because so much of it extends into forested areas, especially above Siskiyou Boulevard where residential neighborhoods encroach on the Ashland Watershed. The new neighborhoods being added to the Firewise list are  Birchwood Lane, Blackberry Lane, Granite Street, Royal Oaks Estate, Tamarack Place, Tolman Creek Park and Clay Street. Your neighborhood can join, too, if it hasn't already, and homeowners can take action on their own by keeping weeds and grass mowed and removing vegetation that can feed fires. Keeping a 30-foot radius around a home clear of flammable material, including bark mulch, is key. Learn more at www.ashlandfirewise.org .
