LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, May 14 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted May. 14, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 14, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Pets get help A free veterinary clinic was held on Tuesday, May 12, in the United Methodist Church parking lot during the Uncle Foods Diner community meal which is held every Tuesday. Over 35 mostly dogs but also cats were examined, given needed vaccinations, flea medication and treated for heartworm disease. Collars, leashes and halters were provided at no charge to the mostly homeless owners who waited, sometimes in the rain, to make sure their animals were cared for. Animal companions belonging to homeless people are well known to be obedient and well-trained. Many owners will make sacrifices to ensure that their companions get food and care. These animals are loved by their owners. I want to extend my gratitude to the volunteers who made this free clinic happen: Dr. Julie Tavares and her nonprofit Homeless Oregon Pet Project, who provided the medications; Dr, Sarah Meintel, Earth Medicine and Acupuncture, who provided the professional care along with Lona Gibbs, an ER vet technician, volunteers from Street Dogs, a volunteer group partnered with Friends of the Animal Shelter; Spay/Neuter Your Pet (SNYP); Nature's Pet and the Animal Medical Hospital, promoting quality of life for street dogs; Nancy Lyon; Sharon Younger; Laurie Cuddy; and Dee Clary. They were all soaked by 6:30 p.m. when they finished. Their time and dedication is given freely and is a labor of love. We plan to offer a free clinic on a regular basis. As always, I extend gratitude to the fellowship of the United Methodist Church who graciously offer their church in support of outreach to those in our community in most need. They provide their hall for the weekly Uncle Foods Diner, sponsored by Peace House, and Tasty Tuesdays for family meals, their parking lot for the Ashland Community Resource Center Shower/Laundry Trailer, and the La Clinica Mobile medical van. Many thanks to all. Regina Ayars Ashland   New track at SOU Last week Southern Oregon University hosted three days of track and field on their new track and football field. On Tuesday, Ashland High School was permitted to host Eagle Point, and on Friday and Saturday SOU hosted the championships of the 10-school Cascade Collegiate Conference. All three days were a success. The college track meet was well-attended and was appreciated by many Rogue Valley track fans who until this spring had not been able to see a multi-school collegiate track meet locally for over a decade. The high school track meet let the kids know what they were missing with their outdated facility. Hosting events such as the high school track meet and the conference championships serves to involve the community, which results in in greater local financial support for SOU. Thus, the more events brought to SOU the better. Brent Thompson Ashland Support HB 3470 Climate change is the most important problem facing humanity. Here in Oregon, there is something we can do about it. HB 3470, currently pending in the state Legislature, would place a mandatory cap on carbon emissions. Similar to California's cap-and-trade system, HB 3470 would reduce CO2 emissions by requiring polluters to buy permits. The number of permits would then be lowered each year, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions over time. The bill would also stimulate Oregon's green jobs market and involve no taxes or fees. Please call your state senators and representatives and ask them to support HB 3470. A green and sustainable future is within our reach.
