LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Nov. 10 DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Nov. 10, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Nov. 10, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News Magic is real “ ... whatever is being given” — Tony Taccone, Director’s Notes, “The Tempest” (OSF 2014) Our community and national treasure, Oregon Shakespeare Festival Artistic Director Bill Rauch, challenged us to imagine the “2014 plays talking to one another.” I took up Bill’s challenge, issued in his “From the Artistic Director” opening words in the playbill (volume 2) for the 2014 season. I experienced two extraordinary theater productions in a three-day span: “The Great Society” (on Oct. 31) and “The Tempest” (on Nov. 2). How, I asked myself, are these two amazing worlds in dialogue? Both plays and productions draw from a deep and mysterious spiritual source — captured by Prospero’s magic and Dr. Martin Luther King’s “fiercely” gentle and persistent commitment to nonviolent resistance to social injustice. There's something “given.” Something beyond merely human capacity to create or sustain. In “The Great Society,” LBJ (played incarnationally by Jack Willis) is clearly center-stage — colorful, vulgar, earthy-smart, cleverly manipulative. He is truly bigger than life. In his “shadow” is the steady, stalwart, earnest, clear, charismatic voice and leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (played with brilliant sincerity, transparency, and understatement by Kenajuan Bentley). LBJ effects important and necessary social changes. Dr. Martin Luther King intimates and catalyzes a dream of true communion and brotherhood/sisterhood among diverse peoples. King reaches into the deepest recesses of being human — our common dignity. MLK’s vision seems “given,” not essentially humanly crafted. Likewise, Prospero’s magic, which finds its truest source in forgiveness of wrongs and the celebration of human love and connection. This source is divine, not merely human. Kenajuan Bentley’s re-enactment of Dr. King’s spirit and work captured the essence of “what’s given” — true to the still, small voice of conscience, even when brutal forces evoke a natural and understandable desire to exert “black power.” Something quiet, something whispered, something beyond human calculation. Thank you, Bill Rauch, Kenajuan Bentley, and the many collaborators who conjured such compelling visions of human being, becoming, and co-existing in the 2014 OSF season. We experienced the power of something being given — made available to us: a sincere desire for human connection and forgiveness and a dream of human communion. Magic is real. What’s possible is more given than crafted. Love. Forgiveness. Nonviolent cooperation. Spurring possibilities for a braver, better world. Daniel Murphy, Ashland Hearth brings out the best It was refreshing to be part of a positive community event last week after there was so much negativity around the recent elections. More than 320 people turned out to the storytelling event sponsored by The Hearth in Ashland which benefited Rogue Climate, a group founded by young people to encourage clean energy and energy conservation in Southern Oregon. Some of the storytellers spoke of poignant personal journeys about realizing the severity of climate change and deciding to do whatever they could to do something to make a difference. Hannah Sohl, told of her experiences with people dependent upon rivers around the world. She choked back tears as she spoke about the friends she made in Bangladesh whose home will likely be washed away in the next few years. She is one of the inspiring and determined founders of Rogue Climate (rogueclimate.org), who inspire me to want to put my values into action. An evening at The Hearth is always moving. Many thanks to Mark Yaconelli for giving us the chance to hear stories from people in our community and to support positive local organizations. May we each find positive inspiration to create the change we wish to see in the world.
