LOCAL ROUNDUP Raiders Maguin, Parks, Sanders highlight first day of CCC track meet Maguin, Parks, Sanders highlight first day of CCC meet By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted May. 9, 2015 @ 2:00 am By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted May. 9, 2015 @ 2:00 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2324,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Amelia Maguin set another school record to win the 100-meter hurdles and Danny Parks stunned his top-ranked teammate with a school record in the discus as the Southern Oregon Raiders gave their hometown fans plenty to cheer about in the first day of the Cascade Conference track and field championships Friday at Raider Stadium. Heading into the second and final day of the 10-team meet, the Southern Oregon men are in first place with 59 points, followed by Eastern Oregon (51), Concordia (37) and Corban (36). College of Idaho has a big lead in the women’s team race with 99 points, while Concordia is second with 74, Eastern Oregon third with 57 and Southern Oregon fourth with 51. Maguin, a senior, captured her third career CCC title and first in the hurdles by crossing the finish line in 14.46 seconds. She pulled away from College of Idaho junior Tiana Thomas, who entered the race with a slightly better qualifying time but ended up settling for second in 14.79. Maguin later pocketed league title No. 4 with a dominant performance in the 400, finishing in 55.6 seconds to set a meet record. Also for the SOU women, senior Jessie Rozario placed second in the 1,500 (4:37.14). Parks, a senior, threw the discus 179 feet, 1 inch on his sixth and final attempt to edge teammate Markus Sanders (175-2). Sanders had already won the hammer with a 192-4 toss, which was more than 20 feet further than the next-best throw. The Southern Oregon men also picked up a huge point boost in the 1,500, placing three of the top four finishers. Matthew Clowes of Concordia won in 3:54.34. After that, SOU senior Zach Boyd-Helm placed second in 3:54.69, Dylan Alexander third in 3:54.78 and Kevin Jorgensen fourth in 3:55.44.   Prep Softball Grace Lenthe’s two-run single in the bottom of the seventh saved Ashland in Game 1 and the Grizzlies needed only five innings to complete a clutch Midwestern League sweep of North Eugene on Friday at North Mountain Park. Lenthe’s bases-loaded hit up the middle with nobody out scored Teresa Lehman and Hannah Teixiera to give the Grizzlies a thrilling 3-2 victory in the first game, and Lenthe went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs in the second game to lead Ashland to a 13-3 rout. The two wins, Ashland’s third and fourth in a row, improved the Grizzlies to 14-9 overall and 8-7 in the MWL. North Eugene fell to 6-16 and 3-12. With three games left on its conference schedule Ashland is fourth in the league standings, two games behind Eagle Point and 1 ½ games ahead of Crater. If Ashland finishes fourth in the MWL standings it will host a 5A play-in game May 22, but if the Grizzlies fall to fifth they’ll travel for that game. In the opener Friday, Lenthe went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Teixiera 2-for-4 with a run scored. Georgia Williams went the distance in the circle and allowed only one hit, but the Highlanders scored two unearned runs thanks in part to three Ashland errors. Down 2-1 entering the seventh and facing a pitcher in Teresa Sorensen who up to that point had held the Grizzlies to one run on six hits, Ashland rallied behind a strong at-bat to start the inning by Teresa Lehman. The catcher fouled off a full-count pitch before taking ball four, and Teixiera then reached on a fielding error to move the tying run into scoring position. Williams walked on four pitches to load the bases and Lenthe ripped Sorensen’s next offering up the middle. Game 2 wasn’t nearly as competitive, as Ashland scored five in the first and three in the second to finish the game early by the mercy rule. Lenthe hit a two-run home run in the fifth, Lehman had two walks and four stolen bases and Gianni Pippa-Baker went 2-for-3 with three runs and a double. In the opener, Dane Stapley, Tommy Ahlstrom and Kordel Pruett had two hits apiece for the Highlanders (17-5, 12-3 MWL), who have won six of their last seven, while Josh Spaht tossed a five-hit shutout. In the nightcap, Ahlstrom threw a three-hitter and went 3-for-4 with a double, and Stapley went 2-for-3 with an inside-the-park home run. For Ashland (13-11, 8-10), Jerry Carroll hit a home run in Game 2.   Girls Golf At Redmond, Ginny Cotton’s shot a two-day total of 200 to finish 20th overall to lead Ashland in the District 2 golf tournament, which wrapped up Friday at Eagle Crest Resort. Madison Odiorne of Summit shot a 144 to earn medalist honors and Summit placed first in the final team standings with a 655 team total. Ashland finished eighth in the 11-school tournament, which began Thursday. Also for the Grizzlies, Maya Timmons shot a 210 and finished 29th, Taylor Barats shot a 211 and placed 30th and Ava Altig shot a 218 and finished 33rd.
