Main St. Six "Becoming an Artist" panelists will share their unique, personal experiences. Representing one of the most time-honored ways of becoming an artist, sculptor Marla Samuel apprenticed at the Antognazzi Stone Carving Studio in Italy. "Marla is going to be sharing her experience as an apprentice, which is an old, traditional way for artists to learn," said Rebecca Gabriel, herself an artist and the organizer of the Art Matters series of panel discussions on art topics. Jennifer Longshore, who teaches art history, theory and criticism at Southern Oregon University, and Bachelor of Fine Arts program graduate Kelly Brand will talk about earning a university degree in the arts. Contemporary representational artist Sarah F. Burns will tell what it was like to study at the Ashland Art Academy — which has since relocated to another state but gave many Rogue Valley artists a rigorous, Old World grounding in classical drawing and painting techniques. Burns has also studied at Pacific Northwest College in Portland. Zoria Blaock will discuss the outsider artist experience. Gloria Kastenberg will talk about an increasingly popular option: finding an artist you admire, and then attending a workshop with that person. Art workshops are proliferating throughout the Rogue Valley, often attracting people who are changing careers, or those who are semi-retired or retired and want to reignite their long-simmering passion for art. As a girl, Kastenberg was always interested in art, but her family convinced her to follow another route in life. She earned a law degree and had a career in law, mediation and facilitation. "My heart was really into wanting to do art again," she said. "I didn't want to go back to college, so I looked for artists I appreciate. I've studied with some great artists." Kastenberg has traveled the world to learn from her favorite artists via their workshops, visiting Cuba, Italy and France. She supplements her self-guided art education with extensive reading on art and art history, as well as visits to museums. She also watches videos. "There's a plethora of information available so you can educate yourself," Kastenberg said. Because of their relatively short time frame, workshops — whether local or far afield — can be ideal for people who can't devote years to a formal art program, she noted. Kastenberg said one downside to her workshop approach is she sometimes feels the need for a more solid grounding in composition, design and color theory — topics that are more fully explored in a college or art school setting. Whatever path a person takes to become an artist, Kastenberg said she still believes a strong foundation in drawing is essential. And there is no substitute for putting in the work to hone drawing and painting skills. "Put in your 20 hours a week and you'll learn," she said.
