Anyone receiving a phone call, text message or email from the Jackson County Citizen Alert program Feb. 3 needn't be alarmed, officials said. The message is a semi-annual test of the program, which is used to notify residents about important public safety information, such as wildfire evacuations, hazardous material accidents, road closures, missing people or fugitives in the area. Jackson County Emergency Management plans routine tests of the system on the first Tuesday in February and the first Tuesday in September. The test is set to begin at 10 a.m., according to a news release. All landline telephones will be called during the test. People also can get alerts sent to cell phones or email, but must sign up for that service. Sign up for Citizen Alert at www.jacksoncounty.org/alert . Those who sign up for updates can customize the information they receive and how they receive it. In addition to emergency alerts, they can choose to receive non-emergency information like public meeting notices and missing person reports. County officials said they do not share program users' information with outside parties.
