LOCAL ROUNDUP Raiders remain No. 1 in spring poll NAIA football coaches give SOU 10 of 11 first-place votes Comment By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Apr. 14, 2015 at 2:00 AM By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Apr. 14, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News The Southern Oregon University football team received 10 of 11 first-place votes and is ranked No. 1 in the NAIA Top 25 Spring Coaches' poll, released Monday. The Raiders, who went 13-2 and won the program’s first national championship in 2014, garnered 236 poll points, nine more than second-ranked and national runner-up Marian (Ind.). Marian received one first-place vote. Morningside (Iowa) is ranked No. 3, Saint Xavier (Ill.) No. 4 and Carroll (Mont.), Southern Oregon’s Frontier Conference rival, No. 5. The Raiders rallied from a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Saints in the national quarterfinals en route to the championship. Eastern Oregon, coming in at No. 13 with 119 poll points, was the only other Frontier Conference team to crack the Top 25. The Mountaineers finished 8-3 in 2014 but did not earn an at-large bid to nationals. Montana Western, another Frontier Conference team, received seven points, five less than No. 25 Benedictine (Kan.). Southern Oregon will travel to Helena, Mont., to play Carroll on Sept. 5 in the Frontier Conference opener for both teams. SOU, which loses four All-Americans to graduation including quarterback Austin Dodge, the National Player of the Year, holds its annual spring game May 1 at Raider Stadium. Prep Golf The Ashland High girls placed sixth and the boys finished 12th at the Eugene Country Club High School Invitational on Monday. Taylor Barats shot a 116 and Maya Timmons and Ava Altig a 117 to lead the Ashland girls, whose top five shot a combined 470. Sheldon won the girls' meet with a 367. Jeremiah Hasskamp shot a 96 (43rd place) and Ben Burkholder a 97 (46th) to pace the Ashland boys, who shot a combined 423. Marist took the boys' team title with a combined 320 and Sheldon's Ben Wanicheck shot a 72 to earn medalist honors. College Track and Field Southern Oregon University sprinter Amelia Maguin earned her third Cascade Collegiate Conference Red Lion Women’s Track Athlete of the Week on Monday after winning the 400-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles Saturday at the Chico Twilight. Maguin won the 400 in 55.98 seconds, the 100 hurdles in 14.59 seconds and also was runner-up in the 200 in 25.51. The senior from Fernley, Nev., has qualified for the NAIA Championships in three events — the 100, 400 and 400 hurdles — and her 400 time was the second-fastest in program history. Southern Oregon hosts the SOU Raider Open on Saturday, the school’s first home meet in five years. The first event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.   By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Apr. 14, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football 2015 Fantasy Outlook for Chargers' Stars Apr. 17, 2015 at 6:15 am Fantasy Outlook for Dolphins Stars Apr. 14, 2015 at 6:37 am Biggest Fantasy Winners, Losers in Free Agency Apr. 8, 2015 at 2:45 am Fantasy Football Outlook for Bears Stars Apr. 7, 2015 at 1:09 am RBs Ready to Break Out on New Teams Apr. 2, 2015 at 10:21 am Who Will Be QB1s with New Teams in 2015?
