Set! Go!"), we reminded readers of the evacuation program adopted by the state: Ready! Set! Go!while focusing primarily on the Ready! portion of the program. This week we would like to focus your attention on the next two levels, Set! and Go! Understanding these levels will provide you with a better understanding of what you can expect from emergency responders and what responsibilities you have as a resident. The Set! level, or yellow Level 2, means that you must be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice. The Go! level, or red Level 3 means you must leave immediately. Getting Set! means you have your ready items and are prepared to evacuate a moment’s notice, noting that you may only have a moment’s notice to do so. Being Set! involves situational awareness. Listening to emergency messages from local sources, including Ashland’s own 1700 AM emergency radio station and notifications from Citizen Alert, an emergency alerting system specific to Jackson and Josephine counties, are two excellent means of obtaining valuable local information. This level includes loading your pets in their carriers and placing livestock in holding areas for faster transportation. Fire effects everyone and your pets and livestock are your responsibility. Remember to pack a “go-kit” for each of your pets (or livestock) in case food or other items is not immediately available. Trust your gut! If you feel uncomfortable or afraid and smoke or flames seem to be in close proximity, it may be time to leave, regardless of local information. Fire can spread quickly as weather conditions change and local response agencies can only inform accordingly if time allows. There are times when conditions change too rapidly for information to be disseminated effectively. Go! means leaving immediately. If you have planned accordingly, you can do so with some confidence that you will be more resilient as a result of your preparations if your home does suffer negative impacts. Once the evacuation level has shifted to the Go! Level, or red Level 3, the time to prepare has passed and trying to gather belongings may implicate far worse results than loss of possessions. Ashland Fire & Rescue encourages you to understand these levels and take proactive actions today to be Ready! If you are prepared, or Ready! you are more likely to find that Levels 2 and 3, or Set! and Go! will not be the nightmare you thought they may be. Make this program the topic of family dialogue this evening. What does it mean to your family to be Ready!
