"We've had quite a bit of gusty winds coming through," National Weather Service meteorologist Brad Schaaf said. A new storm system is anticipated to arrive late Thursday evening or early Friday morning that will bring more rain and moderate winds. "Friday we should see moderate rainfall," Schaaf said. "Winds might be up to 10 miles per hour." Schaaf said rainfall Friday isn't expected to be as dramatic as the downpours that caused local flooding last weekend. “It probably won’t be as big as what we saw on Sunday, but it could mean some periods of moderate rainfall,” Schaaf said. At 10:23 a.m. Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service recorded a wind gust of 46 mph at its weather station near the Medford airport. In Ashland, a gust of 37 miles per hour was recorded at 10:13 a.m., and another of 44 miles per hour. At higher elevations, the winds were even stronger. The National Weather Service recorded wind gusts Tuesday of 102 miles per hour at Squaw Peak, at an elevation of 5,000 feet. "It was part of a frontal system that's pushed through," Schaaf said. The windy conditions didn't impact Jackson County much. Director of Jackson County Roads John Vial said one tree fell on Little Applegate Road Tuesday morning. Vial said that considering the saturation of the soil from the recent wet weather, he was surprised to have only one report of a tree falling in the rural areas. A tree also fell across a homeowner's driveway on White Oak Drive in east Medford. "With all this wet weather, it doesn't take much," Vial said. "You get some breezes and things start coming down." Oregon Department of Transportation spokesman Gary Leaming said there weren't many wind-related problems on Southern Oregon highways. Leaming said there was a slight cleanup required east of Glide on Highway 138 and east of Reedsport at Highway 38. Reach reporter Nick Morgan at 541-776-4471 or [email protected].
