All of us, even if we are proud or not to call ourselves an American we have at least one thing in common and probably many more. Diversity is our strength, and loving that diversity is also our strength. We are the people that came here to escape religious persecution. We are the people who wrote the first constitution putting people first after having a revolution to displace the king’s corporate charters that were the colonies. We are the people who wrote a second constitution putting government and ultimately corporations first. We are the people that helped bring the Hitler reign of terror to an end. We are the people that interned people of Japanese descent and bombed two of their cities to oblivion. We are the people that enslaved part of our own humankind. We are the people that perpetrated the largest genocide of humans on this planet, the people that were here when Europeans arrived. We are the people that have great leaders showing us the way to love. We are the people that have leaders that are showing us what hate looks like. Let's choose leaders who show love and compassion in this world and make decisions based on love of all mankind — for we are one and we need all of us. Blessings on us all for knowing we all have the choice to love. And let us grieve together, realizing sometimes we fail in showing our loving side to each other in the world. Let us rise again knowing that we can love and show compassion even if, right now, there are some that are trying to make us afraid. In fear it is hard to love. But let us do it anyway. Kathleen Hering Ashland Sleep-out campaign In this season of holiday madness, let’s pause for a moment and recognize the compassionate among us: those who make Ashland a true community and not just a collection of buildings and occupants. We at Options for Homeless Residents of Ashland particularly want to recognize all of those who made our annual sleep-out fundraising campaign a success. These are not just the hardy band who spent the night of Nov. 7 at the upper field of Lincoln School despite the cold and drizzle. But there are also those who gathered fundraising pledges and those who made and fulfilled those pledges. Those who slept out to raise funds for the most vulnerable members of our community say more than the coldness in the air and the hardness of the ground made the night memorable. Some said they felt unsafe, even though security was provided. Some said they would never take their dry, warm beds for granted after having to pack up a soaked sleeping bag at dawn’s early light. All said they had a better appreciation of what it means to be homeless — unanchored — alone in the dark. So thank you, Ashland. OHRA raised more than $14,000 in one night because of 140 people with big hearts and open hands. We will use these funds to provide temporary, emergency shelter for families, to help with utility bills, with rent, and to put those in the grip of despair or affliction in touch with counselors or other professionals who can help them find the path to safer, more stable lives. If you missed the night of the sleep-out and the spirit of giving moves you, it is not too late. The Sleep Out Campaign continues through 2015.
