ACCESS Food for Hope, the nonprofit agency's biggest food drive of the year, kicked off Monday with grocery bags in that day's Daily Tidings. The idea is to fill that bag with nonperishable food items and drop it off at one of many collection sites, including Umpqua Bank branches, fire stations and the Ashland Community Services Food Pantry, 1650 Clark Ave. You don't have to use that bag — any grocery bag or box will do, or better yet, send a check. You don't have to give to the ACCESS drive, either: The point is to help those in need. The Ashland Emergency Food Bank, 560 Clover Lane, will happily accept your donation of nonperishable food or financial contribution. If you're already participating in the Ashland Food Project ( www.ashlandfoodproject.com ) — a network of long-term food donors rather than a series of food drives — keep doing what you're doing. No matter where you pitch in, the food gets to those who need it. Increasingly, those are local residents who are working, but need help to get by because of unexpected medical bills or other difficulties. They make too much to qualify for government assistance, but still need help keeping food on the table. So fill that bag, or make that cash donation. You'll be glad you did.
