Being old isn’t. I am the proud new owner of “progressive” lenses. I didn’t buy these lenses because I have forward-looking ideas. When I was taking photos at sporting events recently or trying to read labels, I found myself looking below the lenses of my already strong prescription lenses trying to see if photos were in focus or if I was buying the correct product. I noticed other old people doing the same thing. So I emailed a friend who is also an optometrist. I asked him if he might know a cure for this malady. He assured me he had seen it before. An office visit and a couple hundred dollars later, I am the proud owner of what used to be called tri-focals. Fortunately, now they are called progressive lenses. That sounds much better to my ears, which still work much better than my eyes. I think I might be cured. They will still take some getting used to, so if you see me rolling my head around on my neck when I am around you, please understand that my neck is not loose and I am not applying to be a bobblehead model. I’m simply trying to find the perfect focus angle. Hopefully, I won’t fall down any stairs before I get used to them. But one good point about getting older is being wiser. I am relatively certain that, even with my old eyes and fancy lenses, I could tell the difference between a panda cub and a chow chow puppy. People in Italy might need to see my optometrist because a lot of them paid to have their photos taken with these pandas recently. Owners of the Orfei Circus were charged with fraud for painting black spots on white chow chows and passing them off as pandas. I think I may plan a vacation to Milan soon. It’s not like I have to have any way to pay for it. After I get there, I will just put on a Yankees hat and sign autographs and take pictures with people who want to meet Derek Jeter. If that doesn’t work out, I could always wear a dress and make several hundred thousand dollars giving a speech as Hillary Clinton. I hate to make fun of the culture that gave us pizza, but when the most skeptical among them asked the owner about the panda bear cubs looking like dogs, he was able to allay their concerns by saying they were hybrid chow chow and panda puppies. I don’t know which is worse, the people who thought they looked like pandas or the people who believed dogs and bears are fornicating in the forests of China.
