Starting Monday, Feb. 2, Rhymes with Orange replaced For Better or For Worse on the comics page. Lynn Johnston’s strip has been in re-runs for some years, and the quirky, ironic and, dare we say, smart strip by Hilary Price seems like a good fit for the Ashland sensibility. We’ve gotten some feedback, all negative, but in relatively small numbers (not yet in double digits). One caller pressed the case that For Better or For Worse should stick around to represent what seems the ever-dwindling population of serial comics that actually carry a story line forward, helping build memory and appreciation for narrative. Bravo for a case well made — but for now, we’re sticking with Rhymes with Orange. We like to make room for new cartoonists and that will never happen if we keep publishing reruns of old ones (I know, we carry reruns of Doonesbury and Peanuts, but you have to draw the cartoonists’ line somewhere). Today’s old cartoonists never would have gotten their chance if we’d kept publishing the strips of their predecessors. On Monday, Feb. 9, we started Haiku Corner, also on the comics page. This also is fresh content, but has the added benefit of being, as they say, “locally sourced.” Most of the first week’s content is by yours truly, but after priming the pump I intend to get out of the way and, as they say, let a hundred flowers bloom. Our co-Quills columnist Angela Decker has kindly agreed to curate the content, and we encourage all readers to send their submissions (ideally, in the five-seven-five syllable line configuration, but we’re open-minded) to her at [email protected] . The next day, we were pleased to launch Council Corner, a rotating series of columns by members of the Ashland City Council. We see it as an opportunity for councilors and the mayor to provide unfiltered information about city issues, successes and challenges directly to Tidings readers in print and online. The city and the Tidings strive to serve the same constituency, the people of Ashland, and we think this is a good way to get city leaders’ messages out. We’re now pleased to offer readers local content on the Voices pages, with rare exceptions, every day of the week. We’re writing local editorials four days a week, have packages of local letters to the editor three days a week (usually; you’ve been writing more, keep it up!), and have regular columnists on Monday (Chris Honoré), Tuesday (Council Corner), Thursday (Editor’s Notes, by moi), Friday (Jeffrey Gillespie) and Saturday (Relocations, by Herbert Rothschild Jr.). We welcome your suggestions about filling that slot on Wednesdays with another voice that will complement and round out the kaleidoscopic spectrum we strive to offer you. • • • From the tempus fugit file: Another month has flown by. The good news is, it’s already time for another community coffee. We had a great turnout, about 14 people, and discussion in January at the Bloomsbury Coffee House. We hope you can join me from 8 to 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, at The Beanery, 1602 Ashland St., Ashland, where Allann Bros. Roasting Company got its start in 1972. There’s no particular agenda.
