John Kitzhaber, we find it hard to believe that he would change his stripes so completely by knowingly committing ethical violations — potentially, even crimes — to aid his fiancée, Cylvia Hayes. Call us naive, but until facts prove otherwise, we are prone to give him the benefit of the doubt. We are less generous in our view of Hayes, who by all accounts has been involved in numerous shady dealings, including marriage for profit, illegal marijuana farms and leveraging her position as the state's self-designated first lady to push the agendas of her employers. She, like Kitzhaber, deserves a fair hearing, but she, unlike Kitzhaber, does not have a track record suggesting she is primarily motivated by the public good. Kitzhaber has not only served three-plus terms, he has served them during some tough times. It says a lot about him that, in the midst of that, he has friends on both sides of the aisle in the Legislature and seems to be the one person in Salem who can bring opposing parties to the table and come away with an agreement. But while the governor appears comfortable operating in the middle to find consensus, Hayes seems to linger on the edge, putting herself in situations that are questionable both ethically and legally. That she has dragged Kitzhaber closer to that edge reflects poorly on both of them.
