The Grizzlies rallied from a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit and had a chance to win with an open jumper late, but Stenley Graham’s 3-point attempt rimmed out and Churchill escaped Mountain Avenue Gym with a 51-47 victory. Ashland nearly pulled out a miracle in the final minute. Graham drained a 3 to cut Churchill’s lead to two points and Malik Pippa hit another trey to make it a one-point game. Following a Churchill split at the free throw line the Grizzlies, sans a timeout, pushed the ball ahead and eventually set up Graham on the wing with six seconds left. His shot barely missed, and the Lancers iced the game at the charity stripe. “I just said after the foul, ‘If we get a rebound push the ball and take the first good look,’” Ashland head coach Keithan Gregg said. “We had great look, and (Graham) had just hit a 3-pointer. It just didn’t go tonight. But (the Lancers) are a good basketball team. There’s a reason they’re tied for first.” The loss dropped Ashland to 9-8 overall and 3-5 in the Midwestern League, while Churchill improved to 11-8 and 6-1. The Grizzlies were in prime position to spring the upset before laying an egg in the third, when they committed 10 of their 17 turnovers. Churchill took advantage, turning a seven-point deficit into a seven-point lead. “I stressed (at halftime) that they were going to come out flying around and we were just going to have to take care of the ball and do what we do,” Gregg said. “We turned the ball over way too much in the third quarter. But to my guys’ credit we fought back. They didn’t fold.” Collin Malcolm led the Grizzlies with 17 points, Pippa added 11 and Jack Feinberg seven. Conor Geiger netted 15 points and Hank Forrest 13 to lead the Lancers, who narrowly avoided what would have been their third loss in a row. Ashland has four league games remaining on its regular-season schedule starting Tuesday at home against Crater. Gregg says Ashland is capable of making a strong late-season push. “It’s tough, but it’s one of those things where after a couple days they’ll realize how close we are to turning the corner,” he said. “We show signs of being a good team but we have these ups and downs. Girls Basketball At Eugene, Ashland cut a nine-point deficit to three in the fourth quarter but could get no closer as Churchill held on for a 51-44 Midwestern League victory Friday at Churchill High. Still in search of their first league win, the Grizzlies (7-11, 0-8 MWL) led after the first quarter but went ice cold in the third before making a late push. Georgia Williams led the Grizzlies with 18 points, while Michaela Dunn and Leilani Sukles added 10 apiece. Churchill (8-11, 3-4) was led by Lexie Brehmer’s 15 points. Khadija Smith added 14. Ashland coach Ashley Hafner said Ashland has shown marked improvement in its last two games. “I feel great about where we’re at,” she said. “Our whole thing is to get better every game and the talk going into today was to play 32 minutes of basketball. We played three quarters of that and it’s that one quarter that’s making a difference.” Ashland hosts Crater on Tuesday and Springfield on Friday. “Our Marist game last week and this one are two totally different games that the way we played (before),” Hafner said. “We were stuck in a rut and now our practices have been different, our games have been different and we’ve had different level of intensity on the court.
