OUR VIEW Our View: A two-way race Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Aug. 9, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 9, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News The filing period for city positions in the November election closes Friday, but the contest for mayor has already drawn four candidates — two of whom are serious contenders. Mayor John Stromberg is seeking a third four-year term, saying there is work still to do. City Councilor Carol Voisin, who has served two terms on the council, says Stromberg has been around long enough. The other two candidates are Biome Michael Erickson, running in his third election, and John Greene, about whom we know virtually nothing. Erickson hits all the right Ashland buttons with his platform of sustainability, renewable energy and housing initiatives, but runs off the rails when he says the biggest threat to world peace is "parasitic Zionist hijackers," denies that the Holocaust happened and advocates dismantling the state of Israel, which is in not in the job description of the mayor of Ashland. John Greene declined a reporter's request for an interview, saying he would "just keep doing what I'm doing." Without knowing what that is, it's hard for voters to know why they should vote for him. It's too bad he wouldn't share that with the Tidings. Voisin wants to see more women heading city departments, greater transparency in city government and geographic diversity on commissions. Stromberg says affordable housing and services for the homeless are vital, along with fire mitigation and promoting organic agriculture. Both agree on disaster preparedness. Stromberg cites his record in office; Voisin calls for change. May the best candidate win.
