She studied and planned on going into dentistry, she became a successful runway model, and she was a popular TV show host, all in her native Colombia. In 2002 she nabbed a part in her first American film, the comedy-thriller “Big Trouble.” Lots of small parts in both movies and TV series followed, then she hit the jackpot when the creators of “Modern Family” caught notice, and wrote the character of Gloria to fit her. Since that show’s 2009 premiere, Vergara has found time to act in films, including “The Three Stooges,” “Fading Gigolo,” and “Chef.” Now she’s sharing top billing with Reese Witherspoon in the raucous buddy comedy “Hot Pursuit. Vergara plays a bigger-than-life trophy wife of a mob boss, and Witherspoon is the over-eager cop who’s assigned to get her to a witness protection program. The two characters do not get along. The two actresses, who were recently sitting next to each other in a Los Angeles hotel to talk about the movie, do. Here’s Vergara’s side of the conversation. FYI, that accent is the real thing. Q: You get to put on some really glitzy outfits in the film, while Reese just wears standard police attire. Was it fun to dress like that? A: She got to be comfortable on set. I was miserable all the time, compressed like a sausage in that white dress. Sweating, and then those high heels, and the blisters, while she was all carefree and sitting on the floor. And she wouldn’t even change for lunch. (Her delivery makes it come out as “luuuunch”). It was like the dirtier she looked, the better. Q: There’s a scene in the film where you and Reese have a conversation in Spanish. How did she do? A: Well, her Spanish is not very good. It’s obviously not her best work. (laughs) That was one of my favorite scenes because she had to struggle a lot. I could see fear in her eyes. I could see anxiety and confusion. So it was great because that’s how I feel every single day of my life — looking for words, and seeing people making faces. So I really enjoyed it and I tried not to help her too much. It was like a personal thing I was experiencing that I really liked. Q: Your characters are such opposites. You’re strong-willed and fearless, and she’s uptight and nerdy. Are you at all similar in real life? A: She has a Latin guy inside of her waiting to burst out. (Witherspoon’s reaction: “What? That’s really weird!”) People think we’re so different and then we sit down and we like the same food, we like makeup, we like having the family around, we like the same places to travel, we had kids young. We have a lot of similarities. Q: Do you think your character works as a role model for young girls seeing the film? A: Yeah, I think she’s great. I realized that this movie is not like a normal movie where a girl is usually trying to trick some guy or get some guy to marry her. This is a movie with two different women who have two different personalities and they’re trying to achieve the same thing and trying to survive. I think a lot of girls can look at this and learn many things from the relationship. You don’t have to look the same or be the same to understand another human being and support each other. Q: You seem to be very focused and at ease with the fame that’s come your way. Have you found that you’ve changed much since you began acting? A: I’ve been working in the entertainment business for 25 years. Not at this level, of course, since I got lucky with “Modern Family.” But I try to make my work part of my real life. I’ve been working for 70 percent of my life, so I try to enjoy it, to make it real, to bring my friends and my family to enjoy everything with me: my money, my house, my fame. Life goes fast so you can’t take just work very seriously. So hopefully I haven’t changed. Q: There’s a crazy moment in the film where you share a kiss with Reese. Could you comment on that experience? A: She smells like a strawberry. (laughs) “Hot Pursuit” opens on May 8.
