Briefs: Focus on mental health this month Comment By Melissa Erickson More Content Now DailyTidings.com By Melissa Erickson More Content Now Posted Apr. 7, 2015 at 7:09 PM By Melissa Erickson More Content Now Posted Apr. 7, 2015 at 7:09 PM » Social News May is Mental Health Month. Did you know that: • About one in five American adults will have a mental health condition in any given year, but only 41 percent of them will seek services. • About 10 percent of the American adult population will have a mood disorder, such as bipolar or depression. • 18 percent have an anxiety disorder, including post-traumatic stress disorder. Mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety, are real, common and treatable, according to Mental Health America. Recovery is possible. But not all of us think about our mental health enough. If you’ve had trouble sleeping lately, if you’ve been experiencing racing thoughts, or if you’re just curious, take the mental health screenings at mentalhealthamerica.com and discuss the results with a care provider. Road trip prep If your summer vacation plans include a family road trip, the last thing you want is to have unexpected car trouble. The Car Care Council recommends the following before hitting the road: • Check the brake system and make sure the battery connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free. • Check filters and fluids, including engine oil, power steering and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. Dirty air filters can waste gas and cause the engine to lose power. • Check the hoses and belts, which can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or worn. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system. • Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Underinflated tires reduce a vehicle’s fuel economy, and uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. • Check that the gas cap is not damaged, loose or missing to prevent gas from spilling or evaporating. Changing families The share of children born to unmarried parents has doubled since the 1980s – in large part due to increases in births to cohabiting mothers, according to the National Center for Family & Marriage Research. Since the mid-1990s, at least half of non-marital births occurred in cohabiting unions. There is also some evidence that the increase in unwed childbearing has slowed since the mid-2000s. “The emergence of cohabitation as an acceptable context for childbearing has changed the family-formation landscape,” Christina Gibson-Davis, a sociology professor at Duke University, told The Washington Post. “Individuals still value the idea of a two-parent family but no longer consider it necessary for the parents to be married.” Family wellness People of all ages and body types can benefit from regular physical activity. May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. Want your family to be more active? Here are just a few ideas from the American Heart Association: Encourage your family to make small changes like taking a walk after dinner or going for a bike ride. Encourage your child to join a school club or sports team. Schedule family playtime. Limit screen time, plant a garden and have kids chip in with chores.
