Letters to the editor DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Oct. 14, 2014 @ 12:01 am Updated Oct 14, 2014 at 3:35 PM Posted Oct. 14, 2014 @ 12:01 am Updated Oct 14, 2014 at 3:35 PM » Social News What's he smoking?  I wonder if our city administrator has been using the stuff before it's legalized?  The idea to "draw pot users from across the border, along with OSF fans, and add $1 million to the city coffers" shows just what this administrator values for Ashland.  Do we really want more potheads to be driving our city streets, smoking in our parks and adding to the downtown home-free mobs just to fill the city coffers?  Maybe OSF will post his invite on their ticket website.  Donald Politis, Ashland   Support diplomacy While unfathomable terrorist acts and endless military strikes — guerrilla warfare by insurgents and drone warfare by us — dominate our Middle East news , let us remember the against-all-odds opportunity for nuclear de-escalation with Iran, which now hangs in the balance. As negotiations over Iran's nuclear program continue, I hope Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden and Representative Greg Walden will publicly speak out in support of diplomacy. New sanctions could undermine the progress our diplomats have made toward a multi-year agreement that guards against a nuclear-armed Iran and the risk of yet another war over this issue. Brenda Gould, Ashland   Time for changes You are about to vote on whom you would like to guide our state and federal government. I would like to share how I will vote and why. Let’s start with governor. I am supporting Dennis Richardson, little surprise, but what we need is a person who understands financial, the budget, and can work with both parties. Dennis is a quiet and effective leader who just gets the job done, and anyone who has raised eight daughters should get all of our votes. Gov. Kitzhaber has been in office for 12 years; do we really want him for another four? The waste of money during his terms should not be supported by your vote. This same mismanagement moves me to vote for Dave Dotterrer, who understands the budget and finances as well as Dennis, as he has been in Salem with him for a few years now. I would like to see the Senate split evenly, forcing both parties to work together, and Dave will work for both sides fixing problems with companies and programs that have been a waste of a lot of money. The U.S. Senate race would best be represented with a person from each party, and I support Sen. Wyden and would like Monica Wehby to join him as our junior senator. Now we have a chance to elect a brain surgeon who isn’t a politician, what a combination! I have a hard time understanding that if you were entrusting our future to someone and you had a chance to elect these three people how you could stay on party lines and ask for more of the same. Alan DeBoer, former mayor of Ashland   Thanks for the support The Ashland Lions Club wishes to thank Chris Muck and his crew at Miller Paint Company in Ashland for their generous support of Lions projects. They have provided advice and discounted paint products for our maintenance of the benches at the Lithia Park Band Shell, Lithia Park Picnic areas and most recently they donated the paint required to improve the appearance of our newspaper recycle bin located in the Shop'n Kart parking lot. Thanks to the generosity of the Shop'n Kart facility owners, for many years the Ashland Lions Club has provided the newspaper recycling bin as means to keep newspapers out of the land fill and to raise funds for the Southern Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Center in Medford. Thanks to Miller Paint Company, it now looks a bit better, too. The generosity of Chris and Miller Paint Company allows the Lions to preserve our limited funds for our many other community projects.
