Today we salute the community that makes her job and that of all Ashland School District educators easier. As they have done every five years since 1994, Ashland School District voters on Tuesday renewed a local-option property tax levy that provides 10 percent of the district's general-fund budget. Voters not only said yes to continued excellence, they did so overwhelmingly. Unofficial returns had the Youth Activities and Academics Levy passing with more than 72 percent of the vote. That support is remarkable for a couple of reasons. First, Ashland property values are among the highest in the county, so the $1.29 per $1,000 assessed value means a bigger bite than it would in other communities. Second, Ashland has a relatively small percentage of school-age children. According to the 2010 Census, 15.9 percent of the city's population is under 18, compared with 24 percent in Medford. That might suggest voters would be less likely to support taxes for schools, but the opposite is true. The levy translates directly into benefits for Ashland children. The $2.6 million it provides this school year pays for academic and extracurricular programs at the middle school and high school, guidance and library services district-wide, and elementary music and art instruction. Ashland students are among the only ones in the state whose parents don't have to pay extra for them to participate in sports. Hats off to voters for supporting schools.
