Ashland Calendar, Nov. 26 ... OUR VIEW Our View: DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Nov. 15, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Nov. 15, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News We hope the list of leadership positions announced by Oregon House and Senate Democrats this week doesn't reflect the level of attention Southern Oregon will receive in the 2015 session. The House Democratic Caucus announced a slate of nominees headed by returning Speaker Tina Kotek, D-Portland. With the exception of Majority Leader Val Hoyle and Assistant Majority Leader Nancy Nathanson of Eugene, the rest of the roster stretches from Lake Oswego to ... east Portland. On the Senate side, the only leadership nominee outside the Willamette Valley is Deputy Majority Leader Arnie Roblan of Coos Bay. Senate President Peter Courtney represents Salem-Woodburn; of the rest, five hail from the Portland area and one from Corvallis.  Now, to be fair, there are not many Democrats representing districts outside of the Eugene-Salem-Portland corridor. A notable exception is Rep. Peter Buckley, D-Ashland, who co-chairs the budget-writing Joint Ways and Means Committee. That's not a leadership position elected by the caucus, but it carries plenty of clout. We know Buckley and Sen. Alan Bates, D-Medford, are strong advocates for Southern Oregon interests — as, of course, are the Republicans from this area. But, clearly, the direction will be set from the north end of the state. The lack of lawmakers from these parts with Ds after their names is all the more reason for the majority leadership to remember that the decisions they make and the bills they pass affect all Oregonians, not just those in the state's major population center.    DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Nov. 15, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. calendar Connect with DailyTidings.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Alerts Email alerts RSS feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
