A few words about those bombs: Just don't do it. If you happened to read Fire Marshal Margueritte Hickman's column in Wednesday's paper, you heard her spell it out in no uncertain terms: Personal fireworks were finally banned in the city in 2009 in answer to "the nagging question of why we let people play with fire at the foot of the watershed in some of the hottest and driest times of the year." Why indeed? A home was lost on July 13, 2002 when a firework ignited bushes and then the house. In 2009, firefighters responding to a structure fire above the university after the parade on the Fourth found a firework smoldering in a gutter. The Ashland Chamber of Commerce provides a professional fireworks display on the night of the Fourth for everyone to enjoy. If you must ignite your own devices, please go someplace safe to do it, meaning nowhere in Ashland or the general vicinity. The danger cannot be overemphasized. We all know there are those few stubborn folks who will insist on flouting the city's ban and lighting their own fireworks anyway. We hope their biggest regret will be the fine they have to pay, not the knowledge that they caused a destructive fire that could have been prevented had they only obeyed the law.
