Native American storytellers appear in Ashland | Daily Tidings

Local report The community is invited to share in the age-old indigenous art of storytelling, featuring Esther Stutzman of the Kalapuya Tribe of Oregon, and other storytellers Saturday at the Bellview Grange, 1050 Tolman Creek Road, Ashland. The free event is the ninth annual Native Storytelling Conference hosted by Red Earth Descendants. The drug- and alcohol-free event is appropriated for all age groups. This year's conference will be dedicated to the life, work and stories of Devon Strong (Buffalo Man), who died recently after gracing the community for a decade telling his real life buffalo stories. The conference will begin with a community potluck from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. Participants are invited to bring a potluck item. Red Earth Descendants will provide beverages and additional food. Vendors are invited to set up tables from 3 to 4 p.m. The fee per vendor table is $10. Storytelling by Native Americans will be from 4 to 8 p.m. and other storytellers will be invited to the stage afterward.
