The Grizzlies scored 34 points in the second quarter and rolled up 332 yards in the first half en route to a 40-19 nonleague win over Dallas on Friday at Walter A. Phillips Field. Junior quarterback Kyle Weinberg accounted for 295 yards — 226 passing and 69 rushing — and three touchdowns, Ryne Robitz showed off some dazzling moves and Shashi Penn made a spectacular season debut as the Grizzlies outgained the shell-shocked Dragons 332 yards to 112 in the opening half. “(Weinberg) did a great job,” Hall said. “We kind of did what we wanted to do — try to establish the tempo on offense, get their bigger kids moving around east to west and try to take some shots. We came out with a sense of urgency and we came out with a purpose in the first half.” Ashland (2-0) was held scoreless in a lackluster second half which saw Dallas (1-1) score a touchdown with 22 seconds remaining. But that only served to make the final score look more respectable in a game Ashland dominated from start to finish. Robitz juked his way to 79 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 13 carries, while Penn, who missed Ashland’s season-opening win over Klamath Union with a knee injury, had five catches for 135 yards. Ashland’s defense also delivered, garnering two sacks and two interceptions and limiting Dallas running back Spencer McCarron, who went off for 220 yards last week, to 38 yards on 15 carries. “Their passing game is what it is because (the Dragons) commit so much to the run game,” Hall said. “It played out in our favor, so that was great to see. “Our defensive coaches do a great job of breaking down tendencies and breaking down really how the scheme is blocked.” Dallas looked like it would put up a fight when Chase Mauk took an inside reverse handoff on fourth-and-eight and rumbled 27 yards to paydirt to tie the game at 6. But the Grizzlies took over in the second quarter. Robitz ran in from nine yards out 40 seconds into the frame to put Ashland ahead to stay, completing a 60-yard drive. Three minutes later the senior running back found the end zone again, this time from three yards out, to put Ashland in front 19-6. An interception by Wyatt Ireland, following Peyton Fuller’s tipped pass, gave Ashland the ball back and they capitalized three plays later when Weinberg found younger brother Nicky Weinberg for an 8-yard touchdown pass and a 26-6 lead. Ashland’s next score was the play of the day, a 74-yard bomb from Kyle Weinberg to a streaking Penn, who hauled in the pass in stride at about the 30 then ran away from the defense. “(Penn) looked pretty good,” Hall said. “It’s one of those deals where he can do no wrong. You throw the ball to him and he makes a play. So that’s nice to see.” Ashland added one more touchdown before halftime courtesy of Penn, who sliced in untouched from the 2 to give Ashland a 40-6 halftime cushion. Weinberg kick) D – Mauk pass from Tallon (Mauk kick) D – Hoferber 3 run (kick blocked)  Prep Volleyball At Eugene, the previously unbeaten Ashland volleyball team split its Midwestern League doubleheader on Friday, beating North Eugene, 25-10, 25-22, 25-13, before falling to Marist, 25-16, 25-21, 25-17. Against North Eugene, Hope Baldrica had 12 kills and three blocks and Olivia Rooney nine kills. Ellie Case chipped in five blocks and three kills and Jordan Tilley 34 assists for the Grizzlies (5-1, 3-1 MWL). Grace Lenthe recorded eight kills and four blocks against Marist, while Baldrica added eight kills and Tilley 22 assists and five kills.
