LOCAL ROUNDUP Grizzlies blow away Eagles Sanderson, Carroll brothers lead Ashland to MWL sweep Comment By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Apr. 11, 2015 at 2:00 AM By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Apr. 11, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News The Ashland High baseball team continued to steamroll through the bottom half of the Midwestern League on Friday, sweeping Eagle Point in two lopsided games at The Yard in Eagle Point. Nick Sanderson had six hits and five RBIs and Kyle Milgram and Jesse Carroll provided two solid pitching performances as the Grizzlies beat Eagle Point 12-4 and 12-2 to remain perfect in the MWL. The wins improved the Grizzlies to 11-1 overall and 6-0 in the Midwestern heading into next week’s three-game series against Marist. Eagle Point fell to 2-9 and 0-6. “Today, we got back on track with hitting the baseball,” Ashland head coach Mike Kenask said. In the opener, Sanderson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Carroll 1-for-1 with three walks and three runs scored to lead the Ashland offense. Milgram improved to 3-0 after holding Eagle Point to three runs in 5 2/3 innings. He blanked the Eagles in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, striking out three with one walk. Pinch hitter Justin Robinson, who’s proven to be a clutch hitter for the Grizzlies, added a key RBI single. In the second game, Sanderson went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and scored three runs while Jerry Carroll, Jesse’s older brother, went 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored. Also for Ashland, Aaron Scott went 2-for-4 and scored three times. Jesse Carroll struck out six in five innings with three walks. He allowed two runs, both earned, and improved to 2-0. Ashland will travel to Eugene to take on Marist on Tuesday then host the Spartans the following Saturday. Marist is 5-6 overall and 3-2 in the MWL. “It’ll be our toughest league test of the season and it’s extremely important for us to establish our team against upper-level competition now that we’re getting into that part of the schedule,” Kenask said. “We are excited for the challenge and are prepared to play top-notch Midwestern League competition.” FIRST GAME Ashland 130 014 3 — 12 11 2 Eagle Point 300 000 1 — 4 6 1 Milgram, Sanderson (6) and Hamik; Shopp, Peckins (6) and Little. College Softball Southern Oregon capitalized on some costly errors in the first game and rode the hot bat of Krystina Pardoski in the second to complete a valuable sweep of Northwest Christian on Friday at University Field. The Raiders scored three unearned runs in the fifth inning en route to a 4-3 win in the opener, and Pardoski went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and five RBIs as SOU won the second game 9-0. The sweep improved the Raiders to 29-19 overall and 10-10 in the Cascade Conference and strengthened their hold on the fourth and final CCC playoff spot. With eight games to go SOU is fourth in the standings, 2 ½ games ahead of Northwest Christian (10-27, 7-12) and four games behind Corban. Southern Oregon hosts a doubleheader against Corban today. In the first game Friday, Northwest Christian led 2-1 when consecutive errors by the center fielder and shortstop allowed SOU to reclaim the lead, 3-2. Kelsey Randall then drove home what proved to be a critical insurance run with an infield single to short. Northwest Christian scored on a fielder’s choice in the sixth and advanced the tying run to third with one out, but Randi Kostner was left stranded after a failed squeeze bunt followed by a routine groundout. Randall went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Ally Painter 2-for-3 to lead SOU in the first game. Brianne Craig went the distance in the circle and improved to 13-5 after surrendering one earned run on two hits. In Game 2, Pardoski delivered a two-run double to put the Raiders on top for good in the first, and Ally Painter added a two-run single in the second. Randall was 3-for-3 and scored three runs in the second game, and SOU pitcher Cheyenne Bricker held Northwest Christian scoreless on two hits.
