And the class has reason to thank the entire community for the support it consistently provides its school system. Principal Michelle Zundel, who will move on herself next month to  a new job with the Medford School District, summed up the significance of this group of graduates when she said, "They have broken down barriers." Among those, Zundel mentioned in comments to a reporter before her public speech, are the school's first females on wrestling team and a gender-neutral homecoming court. The homecoming court change was the idea of student body co-presidents Brielle Preskenis and Jackson Richmond, who sold it first to the student leadership council, then to  Zundel, then to the student body as a whole. The result: for the first time ever, students elected  not a king and queen but three members of the "homecoming court" irrespective of gender. The idea was to recognize that students who might be transgender or gender-neutral were excluded from the traditional couple-focused king and queen. Zundel noted that students also were concerned with how well the school serves economically disadvantaged classmates. "They have a real social conscience and are removing barriers to human potential," she said. "It's really exciting." Yes, it is.
