LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Aug. 13 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Aug. 13, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 13, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Thanks for editorial  Thanks for encouraging the city to work with the citizens of Ashland to improve the Plaza in your editorial of July 31, “Hear them out.” Our Ashland Plaza Restoration Project group and contributors are all about working constructively with the city, and you will see this immediately by reading our many Facebook posts. We are not trying to “force” the city to do anything, as is stated in the editorial. Nor has APRP ever engaged in any "vitriolic" attacks agains the city, as is incorrectly stated in the Tidings editorial. We sincerely hope your subsequent "Our View" editorials will reflect these facts accurately. It is understandable that many here were shocked and dismayed by the 2-year-old Plaza redo, but the only way to improve it is through constructive collaboration with the community and the city. That's the reason APRP was created, and why it will continue to be a voice in our community for positive Plaza reforms, as reflected in this excerpt from APRP's mission statement: "The Ashland Plaza Restoration Project (APRP) has been formed to help ensure that the Plaza’s appearance and function are compatible with the historical aspects of the Ashland downtown area, and that the Plaza is reflective of Ashland’s culture and charm. The intent of the APRP is to bring the greater Ashland community together to assist the city’s government in the design and funding of improvements to the Plaza." The Plaza is our town's center, our traditional gathering place. It should be beautiful, reflective of our downtown's rich historical architectural character, exemplify Ashland's artistic culture, and be welcoming to all. Roy Sutton and David Sherr Co-Founders, Ashland Plaza Restoration Project Connect the dots Congratulations and thanks to the Mail Tribune editorial (Sunday, Aug. 9) supporting the EPA effort to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from our national power plants. Since carbon dioxide is the main contributor to global warming, and power plants are the main emitters of this polluting gas in the U.S. it only makes sense, if we care about ourselves and future generations, to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. We have seen story after story over the last few months identifying the consequences of global warming in the region. From reduced snowpack, to drought, heat waves and wildfires, we are living the consequences of global warming every day. Recent polls tell us that even more Republicans support the EPA plan than oppose it, so why do so many elected representatives in Salem and Washington cling to the out-of-touch idea that it is neither happening nor our responsibility? For some area residents and their representatives, connecting the conspicuous dots is obviously needed. I encourage the Mail Tribune to ask reporters covering global warming stories to make the connection between reducing carbon dioxide emissions and what we see happening around us.
