Under-floor heater caused Union Street fire in Ashland Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Apr. 3, 2015 at 12:51 PM Posted Apr. 3, 2015 at 12:51 PM » Social News Lightweight clothing atop a drying rack over an under-floor heater caused Tuesday's fire on Union Street in Ashland, Ashland Fire & Rescue officials said today. The two-alarm fire at 31 Union St. off Siskiyou Boulevard destroyed one unit of the two-unit house. A woman who lived on the first floor suffered light smoke inhalation and went to the hospital by private car, said Margueritte Hickman, division chief and fire marshal with AFR. One of two pet cats made it out safely; the other succumbed to smoke, she said. The upstairs resident was not home at the time of the fire. Firefighters arrived within three minutes of being dispatched about noon Tuesday and had the blaze knocked down within 11 minutes. It is unknown whether the smoke detector was working and there were no sprinklers in the home, Hickman said. "It was good we were in quarters and able to respond quickly. ... It could've been much worse," she said. Two engines from Ashland Fire & Rescue and one engine from Jackson County Fire District 5 responded to the fire. The 2,586-square-foot house suffered extensive smoke damage to its interior, and Hickman said the fire and possible electrical problems have left it uninhabitable. The house was built in 1910 and remodeled sometime around 1970, according to Jackson County property records. The under-floor heating unit was covered by a metal grate. "It's what we see in older homes," Hickman said, adding the metal grates "get really hot." It is not known whether the heater malfunctioned and caught the clothing on fire or whether something fell through the grate, Hickman said.
