TAP opens Monday, Jan. 11, at 567 Fair Oaks Ave., across from Mountain Meadows Retirement Community, just off North Mountain Avenue and, will serve Epiphany and Columbian from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for free (as in free) all week, with espresso drinks at normal prices, says manager Simon Weibel. The café is in the big, modern vaulted-ceiling space of the octagonal building just 100 yards west of Mountain Avenue. It’s about a fourth of the space, with the rest occupied, in open-air style, by The Artisan Project (TAP), a new marketing business dedicated “supporting artisans (musicians, artists, food workers) to reinvent the middle class,” says its Facebook page. TAP Coffee serves the usual range of lattes, cappuccino, mochas and teas along with baked goods — Organicos donuts, croissants from Luna Bakery and macaroons from Shane’s Sweet Tooth bakery. The café has a couch, bar and table seating for about 10 people and hopes to capture traffic of drivers coming the back way off the north interchange, says Weibel, as well as seniors from Mountain Meadows and people from downtown, where parking can be a challenge. Weibel, a 2005 graduate of Ashland High School and former wildfire fighter with the U.S. Forest Service, says the upscale office vibration should attract people to meet and talk about business plans, as well as to get away from the hustle-bustle of Ashland’s downtown and strip. He was trained in depth by award-winning Tim and Katie Case, owners for 10 years of Case Coffee, across from Southern Oregon University. “They instructed me on barista techniques, how to make coffee the right way and how to get the best flavor out of it,” says Weibel, a native Ashlander. The attractive coffee bar was created from cypress from pickling barrels in a pickling factory by Jefferson Woodwright. They still have the faint smell of pickles, Weibel notes.
