But if you didn’t, no worries because “10 Cloverfield Lane” is not a sequel, but a stand alone, taut psychological thriller that indeed does have a high creep factor, but is far more subtle and unsettling than its distant cousin. The use of “Cloverfield” in the title is just good (as opposed to cynical?) marketing. If there is a fragile thread that connects the two, it runs through J. J. Abrams (“The Force Awakens”), the “Lane” producer and a guy who knows a good story when he finds one. And this is indeed a sinister tale that makes superb use of what might be referred to as the “terror-trope.” If all the above is beginning to feel like I’m avoiding even hinting at the plot or drilling down to specifics, you’d be right. The less you know about what to expect from “10 Cloverfield Lane” the better. Try not to watch the trailer. What you will experience going in is a master class in pacing and ambience, using those enjoyably uncomfortable yet familiar emotions such as claustrophobia and paranoia. Meanwhile, you will be doing your own reality check regarding what is real and what are the demented delusions of a wacked-out survivalist. That would be the talented John Goodman as a guy named Howard. Without giving too much away (and you may want to stop reading at this point), “10 Cloverfield Lane” is what you might call a container film — a hothouse of riveting tension, created by the fact that the situation is inescapable (on an airplane, for example). This story takes place in an underground bunker that offers as many amenities as can be created, all predicated on not going topside for one to two years. What’s up there, Howard insists, they don’t want to experience. The three actors are excellent, led by a solid and nuanced performance by Goodman and buttressed by a convincing, resourceful, McGuyver-like damsel-in-distress portrayal by Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Michelle. The third corner of the triangle is John Gallagher Jr., a local handyman called Emmett, who talked his way into the bunker. Winstead didn’t. Whether you agree with the film’s ending (call it act three) or not will be a personal judgment. It may satisfy or it may be simply too predictable. And admittedly, the writers do get themselves into a bit of a jam, though what it does do is set up the second installment that will be, hopefully, as well done as this one and possess that wonderful, chilling, sustained sense of dread. Which is exactly the emotion — call it that affective thriller sweet spot — that films of this genre aim for. Nailed.
