The temporary exhibits pop up in unexpected places like retail shops, empty buildings and outdoors — away from traditional gallery settings. Local artist Sarah F. Burns recently helped organize a pop-up show inside the Ashland Springs Hotel during the Ashland Gallery Association's annual A Taste of Ashland art, food and wine extravaganza. During an interview, she offered advice for people who want to plan their own. Q. What are some of the things to consider when thinking about a pop-up art show? A. First of all, you have to have a space. The Ashland Springs Hotel was generous in providing their amazing space. It's something I'm always on the lookout for. Maybe a business is between tenants for a couple of weeks or months and would like a pop-up show to help fill the space. One of the tricky things about alternative spaces is they're not actual galleries. They usually don't have gallery lighting. When considering what to put in there, be conscious of whether or not the art will display well. You don't want to put it in a space where it doesn't show well. But non-conventional spaces can be awesome. Finding artists to be in the show was easy to do because it was held as part of A Taste of Ashland. The Ashland Gallery Association has artist names and numbers. Artists are very motivated to get their work out there. I got a really strong response. We were able to fill the space with a variety of cool art. We couldn't hang art on the walls because of the lattice work in the Crystal Room at the Ashland Springs Hotel. Everyone had to bring their own display easel. You need a way to take money and make sales. We used smart phone technology to take credit cards. We were able to pull things together and make a fun and temporary show. Because it's temporary, it's exciting. Visitors enjoy the novelty. We got a great response. Q. What are some of the things people might not realize when considering a pop-up show? A. It's a lot of work. I love art galleries. They are the meat and potatoes and heart and soul of the art scene. They have all these systems in place. It's more efficient for artists to have the support of galleries. But more art is moving toward online venues and art fairs and pop-up galleries. They are another way to connect with people. The pop-up trend started with restaurants. It was such a fun and novel idea. Other types of businesses started doing it as well. Everybody likes new, novel things to do. The energy around a pop-up restaurant, craft fair or art show is fun for people. A lot of pop-up shows are by people who have ideas and want to try them out, but maybe don't have access to capital to start a brick-and-mortar store or risk a big investment for something that might not work out. A pop-up is an opportunity to test the waters with the public. Q. What advice would you give someone organizing a pop-up art show? A. Plan in advance. Do as much as possible in advance. The day and week of the show gets so busy. It's like moving or having a wedding. Definitely make sure to thank the businesses that are willing to share their space for something like this. The arts are notoriously challenging and risky, but they're still vital and important. It's great when the community is supportive. For more information about Sarah F.
