Find prior episodes at www.dailytidings.com. Yesterday, Blue and I watched a silent video clip shot by Jeremy Tanner of the inside of Bring it on Pawn in Medford. Jeremy had disappeared after going undercover to do research for his documentary film. The clip revealed that the shop had a pugilist theme, complete with boxing ring, and one of the owners swaggering around in silk trunks, cape and lace-up leather gloves. We still needed more background before going undercover. The Ashland Film Festival had just ended and Blue had reached out to a couple of filmmakers who knew Jeremy. There were three of them, all documentarians, who had met Jeremy through Southern Oregon Film and Media. Huck was interested in addiction and the influence of AA on recovery. Jewel was exploring crystal temples and the people who created them. And Marlena was researching local women who came out as gay in mid-life. We were meeting Jewel today. She was filming a local healer who used many kinds of crystals in her practice. We arrived as the film crew was setting up for a shot. Two women stood chatting in the living room, a slight, energetic white-haired woman wearing electric blue, and a tall redhead with three cameras around her shoulders. “Dawn, this is Jewel. She’s agreed to give us a few minutes,” said Blue, who had to then dash to another appointment. “Nice to meet you. We’re between scenes, so how can I help you?” said Jewel, leading us into a room filled with angular white crystals lining the shelves, pointing down from the ceiling and standing tall on the floor. A massage table stood in the center of the room. “This is amazing,” I said, edging carefully into the narrow space, trying not to knock anything over. “Yes, it is,” agreed Jewel as light danced in rainbow colors on the ceiling. “Joan, the healer, calls it the Cave of the White Dragon because the ancients believed crystals to be formed from dragon’s breath.” “Impressive. Really. But a roomful of puppies works better for me than a room full of crystals. Whoops.” I steadied a sharp crystal stalagmite that I’d elbowed. “Well, each to her own, eh? So, you wanna know about Jeremy?” “Yes, anything at all. How well did you know him?” I pulled out my notebook. “We’d talked at a few SOFAT mixers. I knew he wanted to explore the changing pawn industry. He had a contact. The guy’s name was Sal, I think. Jeremy offered to create a marketing video for his shop in exchange for posing as a salesman, I believe.” Jewel brushed dust off an amethyst cluster with her sleeve. “That’s really helpful. Thanks.” As I walked out of the dragon cave, my cell phone rang. “Dawn, it’s Josh.” “What’s up?” I asked “We’ve got a problem.” “You sound like you’re calling me from inside a barrel. Where are you?” I asked “I’m at the Ashland Police Station. Mom got arrested.” “What? What for?” “For wearing her vagina puppet in the Plaza.” Josh shouted over the background noise. “I can’t believe it.” “When can you get down here?” Josh asked. “I’m on my way.” I hung up and jumped in my car. Next week: Dawn finds out the real reason her mom got arrested.
