Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jun. 13, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Jun. 13, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News June 13, 1915 MODEL CHAPEL CAR VISITS CITY ON MISSIONARY WORK The Baptist Missionary Chapel car "Grace" is sidetracked at Main Street. This car is in charge of Rev. Geo. L. White, superintendent for California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Arizona, of the American Baptist Publication society. He gave an interesting address upon the chapel car and other evangelistic home mission work of that organization, including their mission boat, the Robert G. Seymour on Puget Sound. This boat, like the chapel cars, carries the church and Sunday school to thousands of people who cannot otherwise be reached, in the numerous villages and towns along the shores of the Sound. There are ten chapel cars in the United States. Seven of these are in charge of the Baptist denomination, and the other three are Catholic. The "Grace" is the "last word" in chapel car construction, including serviceability, comfort and convenience. Its cost, including the furnishings, was about $22,000, the funds being  supplied by Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Conaway and Mr. and Mrs. A. Otis Birch of Los Angeles. It is a memorial of the Mr. and Mrs. and Mrs. Conaway's deceased daughter, who was a sister of Mrs. Birch. The car is 87 feet long overall, and is of solid steel construction, with quartered oak interior finish and furnishings, the upholstery being of substantial leather. It includes every convenience of modern car construction and the chapel has a seating capacity of 100 persons. The pulpit bears the names of the donors, and of her in whose memory this car was built. Among the features are the commodious observation and entrance platform, the library of books, the fine organ, a real bed-room, dining room and study, guest room, bath room, kitchenette, fully equipped with stove, ice box, etc., besides the heating and lighting system for the car while on sidings or en route. Numerous closets and other conveniences are provided for the occupants, and those who attend the church services and Sunday school classes. Stops will be made at Ashland and Sacramento. The car may be placed on exhibition for a few weeks at the exposition in San Francisco. Upon entering the regular evangelistic work, the car will be placed in charge of Rev. and Mrs. E.R.Hermiston.
