Phillips Stadium, but there is nothing to tell us who this man was — until now. Making it her senior project, Hope Baldrica raised $1,915 for a plaque showing the scholastic and sporting achievements of Phillips, who graduated from AHS, became a reconnaissance photographer in French airplanes in World War I and was shot down by Germans and killed on Oct. 1, 1918. The handsome and sturdily built descendant of Oregon Trail pioneers, Phillips was captain of both football and basketball teams in his senior year, played on the school’s baseball team, acted in the high school play “College Boys” and was class president. On the football team, he was quarterback (then called “thrower”) and led them to state championship. Phillips went to Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University), then trained at the Presidio in San Francisco to become a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He went to aerial gunnery and photography school in France and volunteered for service in France’s First Aero Squadron, says Baldrica, using research of Ashland historian George Kramer. While shooting photos of German artillery positions from a SPAD XI biplane during the Meuse-Argonne offensive, the final, war-winning attack by the American-British-French allies, Phillips lost his protective cover of a friendly plane (it started following the wrong plane) and was shot down in flames by four German planes. He is buried “by the side of a pretty road, just north of Varennes,” according to the gunner of the misdirected plane, Joseph Farnham, in a letter to Phillips’ parents. They went to the site of the smouldering wreck and buried the pair of aviators, using the plane’s struts for crosses, he added. The Great War, as it was called, ended five weeks later. When they learned of his death, his parents opened a letter marked that it should only be read if he were killed. A sentence from the letter, now in the collection of Ashland historian Victoria Law, is on the plaque. It says, “The best way to lighten the effect of sorrow is by hard work. Do not sit and brood over your misfortune but set about to relieve the suffering of others.” His family donated land for the AHS practice field. The football field was named for Phillips in 1940  and a large sign bearing his name was erected in 1958. Ashland historian George Kramer did much of the research on the plaque. It will be dedicated by Bladrica with a short presentation on Phillips at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, just before the AHS homecoming game. It is made of glass-fused ceramic enamel and is weatherproof. It is a yard tall and will be affixed to the entrance to the stadium’s stands.
