The number of shoppers is roughly the same as the expectations leading into the 2013 Thanksgiving period. The average amount spent by shoppers over Thanksgiving weekend in 2013 was $407, down 4 percent compared with the year before. This year the shopping opportunities will expand, with major retailers such as Wal-Mart, Sears, Target and Macy's opening on Thanksgiving day. The NRF is predicting a 4 percent increase in holiday sales. Coming up: Skip the big box stores and hang out locally for Small Business Saturday.  The second annual event  is a day meant to draw customers to local small shops and restaurants that sometimes get lost amid the shopping frenzy. For those who want to avoid the in-person shopping experience altogether, there's Cyber Monday, when online merchants try to lure digitally savvy shoppers with special deals. Question:  The holiday shopping season traditionally starts with Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Now there's Gray Thursday for shoppers who want to start even earlier. Is the holiday shopping season a big event for you and how early do you get started? Mary Lou Medina  — I think it’s disappointing, moving the shopping day forward to Thanksgiving. Families should be at home together on Thanksgiving and not be going out shopping. Yes, it’s exciting if we wait till midnight and go out and do it then. That’s on Black Friday, but not at 5 p.m. Thursday. Clerks are coming to work Thursday night and that’s kind of sad. They should be with their loved ones at home. Justin Rinefort  — I definitely don’t like shopping on that day, a holiday. I feel sorry for the people who have to work then. We might go out Friday morning for shopping. We usually go to the stupid electronic stores, like Staples or Best Buy. I don’t like it but the family is into it. Norman Crane — I hate to see this happen because employees should have the whole day off. I certainly don’t intend to go shopping then (on Thanksgiving). We do a little of both, shopping in the valley and going on the Internet or in catalogs and have already got that done. We may buy some last-minute things locally. I used to buy everything on Christmas Eve but my wife got me out of that. Pat Fitzsimmons  — We’ve got to leave Thursday as a day of rest and giving of thanks. I’m helping people, not the economy, by doing that. We don’t do Christmas shopping. We give of the spirit and by spending quality time with family. We have no gift exchange. We just told everyone we’re not doing that anymore. We send cards and write good things in there. Even my wife and I don’t exchange gifts. We go for a hike and share as much love as we can. It’s priceless! We found the whole gift exchange thing takes away from what we really want to share.
