LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, March 14 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Mar. 14, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Mar. 14, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Enforcement needed I have no problem with the creation of Accessory Traveler's Accommodations which may be voted on by the City Council as soon as March 17. In fact, I feel it would create a less expensive alternative and bring in visitors to Ashland who would not normally be able to afford it. The proposal here mandates that only one party at a time with only one car can be provided with not more than two rooms by the hosting party. Use of the kitchen is prohibited and the proprietor must be present during the visit. Unfortunately, here is what will happen. Hundreds of applicants will apply for and be licensed to operate such accommodations in every neighborhood in Ashland. After that, it will be impossible to determine who is complying with the ordinance and who is not. As in the past, those who don't find the rules agreeable will simply do what they want, except now, with their license, they will be able to advertise and operate in full view and without fear of being discovered. By passing this with no effective plan for enforcement, the City Council will be creating a chaotic situation which will lead to the end of any kind of municipal control of the accommodation industry here in Ashland. It is my suggestion that those who are in favor of this get rid of the rules pertaining to traveler's accommodation all together. Simply award a business license to anyone who is willing to pay for it, and require a city room tax be charged. The negative impact of doing that, however, is another issue. Stephen Larson, Ashland Gold star to Voisin The Daily Tidings gets a gold star for its “Council Corner” feature and also a gold star to Carol Voison for her wise observations in that feature on March 10. Aside from her account of what makes Ashland special is her vision of a solar farm for the town. She urges action be taken to avail financial support — 50 percent — from state and federal agencies before next year when these funds may be canceled. As she points out, with such support, our costs are minimal. A solar farm would enable us to avoid far more expensive energy rates from Bonneville Power and ensure a reliable and renewal source of energy for Ashland. I support her view and urge the council to promptly deal with this matter. Equally eyebrow raising is her creative idea to have a trolley service downtown during high tourist season to help reduce carbon emissions and downtown parking problems. She suggests doing a trial run this summer. I like it. Phil Gagnon, Ashland Don't be manipulated On the first day of business of the Republican-led House of Representatives, the Republicans set in motion a plan to cut Social Security disability benefits by 20 percent. They set in motion a plan to cut food stamp benefits. Shortly after that they set in motion a plan to replace veterans' health care with vouchers for private insurance. Then Greg Walden (number five in the leadership hierarchy of the republicans) filed a bill to overturn the FCC decision on net neutrality. He did this at the behest of his second largest donor, Comcast Corporation. These are the kinds of things Republicans do when they know you are watching. Can you imagine what the Republicans are doing when your head is turned? Never forget that the Republican agenda is purely economic. Republicans could not care less about values. Your sense of morals is a tool Republicans use to manipulate you to vote against your own economic interests. Please try to remember that when you vote. Michael G.
