It is the most powerful production car ever made, thanks to a 6.2-liter HEMI supercharged Hellcat engine that delivers 707 horsepower and 650 lbs.-ft. torque. On the track, it can run a 1/4-mile time of 11.2 seconds with a speed of 125 mph with street tires (in the 10 second range with drag radials). Oh, it also has an EPA fuel economy rating of 22 mpg highway on the ride home. Mated to a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. The Challenger SRT Hellcat is part of the Chrysler Group’s high performance lineup. When it comes to muscle cars, the Hellcat is one of the most powerful street legal cars on the road. To put things in perspective, let’s take a look at some numbers. • The 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat has a base price starting at $59,995; delivers 707 horsepower and 22 mpg highway. • The Lamborghini Aventador Roadster has a base price of $425,845; delivers 700 horsepower and 18 mpg. • The Aston Martin Vanquish has a base price of $287,820; delivers 576 horsepower and 18 mpg. • The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT has a base price of $221,580; delivers 583 horsepower and 19 mpg. Those are great facts for comparison purposes, but how does it ride? I was extremely impressed with the Hellcat’s performance during my one-week evaluation period. I didn’t have a chance to visit the track this week, so all of my miles were logged on public roads. What impressed me most is how civilized the Hellcat performed in normal driving conditions. I had no problem driving the posted speed limit without feeling like I had to work to rein in the supercharged HEMI Hellcat engine. That said, there were a few occasions I had the opportunity to open it up on a lonely open road where I had the chance to really experience what this car is all about. At speeds above 70 mph, the five-passenger, rear-wheel drive Challenger SRT Hellcat really shines. In addition to its many, many performance components, it is also very nicely equipped. The heated and ventilated front seats are extremely comfortable, suitable for long road trips (and I thought the heated steering wheel was a nice touch). Of course I’m a fan of the keyless entry system with push button start and I absolutely love the sound of the HEMI Hellcat engine when the ignition button is pushed. The roar is impressive. Dodge has done a nice job of ensuring the Hellcat is fully connected by including Chrysler’s Uconnect system with navigation, information and entertainment features. For those in the market for a performance vehicle, the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is a must for a test drive.
