The bank recently contributed $1,000 for the museum’s Inspiring Minds program, which helps cover the cost of a one-year museum membership for all the families served by a number of local Head Start centers. According to Chip Lindsey, ScienceWorks’ executive director until he recently left to become education director at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, Head Start families who participate in the Inspiring Minds program become avid museum-goers at rates similar to traditional visitors who typically have overall higher levels of household income and educational attainment. “One of ScienceWorks’ top priorities is to bring the joy and wonder of science to more children and their families — particularly in under-resourced households. Our Inspiring Minds program has been successful in removing real, as well as perceived barriers that prevent many of these low-income households from making the world of science a part of their family culture,” said Lindsey. “The Inspiring Minds program relies on financial assistance from community partners invested in our work, and we are grateful for Bank of the Cascades generous support.” For each participating Head Start center, ScienceWorks hosts a special evening at the museum solely for families enrolled at that center. This introduces families to the museum with their peers, their teachers and family advocates in an engaging night of science fun. This special evening breaks many misconceptions about the museum for these newest family members. They leave ScienceWorks knowing they are part of the ScienceWorks “family” and viewing the museum as an important part of their child’s education. At the event’s conclusion, each family is given a museum membership that provides unlimited visits to the museum all year long, as well as access to more than 300 other institutions across the nation. More than 200 families are a part of the Inspiring Minds program, providing a year of science learning for nearly 800 family members who would otherwise not know of ScienceWorks. “Bank of the Cascades is committed to making the communities we serve stronger, and directly supporting local students and their families is one of our top priorities,” said Julie Miller, Bank of the Cascades Oregon region president. “We are especially grateful for the opportunity to support Head Start families through Inspiring Minds, and look forward to building a strong partnership with ScienceWorks that benefits local families for many years to come.” ScienceWorks started its Inquiring Minds program in 2012 in response to studies showing that children from low-income households are far less likely to be exposed to educational opportunities associated with museums and science centers.
